Looking for assistance in installing a 4 speed C10

I currently have a 1969 C10 with a 3 speed manual tranny. not working well with the new 383 strocker. Need informqation on what it takes to put a 4 speed in it. I use this on the street, and also make a few passes with it a few times a year.

Not sure what model to look for. I am currently set up with a course shaft clutch wise.

Anyone has information from experiance, it would be greatly appreciated.

An sm420 is a pretty straightforward swap. You'll need to cut out your floor board and find a bolt in hump. I'm not sure you would want a granny four speed though. You will also have to add a cross member under the rear of the trans cause the bellhousing wont support the extra weight of the bigger four speed.

I was looking more for a side shift, and not the granny 4 speed. Maybe a Saganaw? not sure what other options are available

Re: Looking for assistance in installing a 4 speed C10

I am taking a 700r out of mine and installing a muncie 4 speed out of a 69 camaro.
I originally bought a saginaw----but if you are running a 383 the saginaw will be too light, especially if you going to play on the 1/4 mile.
You can use the tailshaft crossmember, no prob. Getting your clutch linkage to work with most headers is an issue and using a bench seat is a bit of a prob. (may have to fab. a shifter handle. Over all its a relatively easy Do.

Re: Looking for assistance in installing a 4 speed C10

This is all great information guys. With the3 speed already installed, the linkage challenge has already been addressed. Do you know if the 69 car Muncie is a course shaft? Will drive shaft length or splines become challenges?
Thanks

Re: Looking for assistance in installing a 4 speed C10

I have a M22 in my 72 SWB the drive shaft should be the same, and Most of the muncie 4 speeds had the 10 spline input whitch would also be the same. I bought a new crossmember from CPP and got rid of the old bell housing set-up. Hurst still makes a shifter and linkage for this change PN 3910002 for the shifter and you would need to know which model trans for linkage kit.

Here's some info on muncie's. Not cheap. Count on a couple grand by the time you're done swapping.

Re: Looking for assistance in installing a 4 speed C10

If it's anything like my old 78 the swap is a breeze. I had a Muncie close ratio 4sp from a 69 Nova SS. The 3 ott in the truck broke. I rolled it in the shop and out of the shop in less than 3 hrs. It was a bolt in affair, drive shaft and all. I did have to cut the hole for the shifter and I modded the shifter to clear my bench seat rather than buy a truck shifter.
I sold that Muncie for 250 10 yr or so ago.

Re: Looking for assistance in installing a 4 speed C10

Thanks all for the infomation. It looks like i have some homework to do in locating the right Muncie. Other than that It doesnt sound as though this is going to be too difficult ofa task. I do see different ratios in the gears, any suggestings on which works best for both street and strip? I just put an Eaton posi in it and left the 373 gears as I want to not only get a decent ET, I want to do decent on the Hyway too.
