Strange radiator crossmember ?

My question is if there is a difference between radiator core supports thru the years? My frame has a step, where the front motor mount is about 3" higher than the radiator mount, I have a friends truck I compared it to, and his is almost level. When I bought the truck there was a chunk of I-Beam filling this 3" gap. Is there a taller radiator core support on some trucks? The picture might do a better job of explaining.
The truck is supposed to be a 51 Chevy 3100 long bed. It had a 54 bed on it when I got it.

Re: Strange radiator crossmember ?

Digging thru the projects thread, 1lo67 gmc suburban has the same step in the frame, is this a Gmc thing? Or a suburban thing? Will keep digging.

Re: Strange radiator crossmember ?

Thanks, looks like I might have a different frame. Was there a long bed option for the half tons, or is the frame off something bigger? Is there any key differences between different gmc frames thru the years?

Re: Strange radiator crossmember ?

Chevy didn't offer a half ton long bed until the body change in 55. GMC had the half ton long bed as early as 50 maybe even earlier. I have one and so does a friend.
