Line-X Estimate Too High?
Just called the local Line-X shop for an estimate to spray Line-X on just the four inside bed panels and the tops of them on my 76 C10 Stepside short bed with wood bed.
The first price they quoted me was $800! They assumed the bed would have require extra masking (how long could that possibly take?). I explained that it's a wood bed truck, and that the old bed has been removed, and I will be installing Trex decking AFTER the bed is sprayed. Said I will gladly mask off the undercarriage myself using cardboard or whatever, and that a little overspray on the undercarriage is not a problem anyway. The new estimate (to do just the sides and tops, no floor, no need to mask the bottom) was $699! From reading old posts around the Web, I was under the impression that the price would be more in the $200-400 range. Anybody out there had this done RECENTLY, especially a case like mine? How much did it cost? Opinions on the quote? If I can't get it done a lot cheaper, I'll either do a DIY bed liner (yeah, I know, they suck) or just paint it (probably Blitz Black). I plan to paint the truck Blitz Black later, thought the textured bed liner would be a nice accent. BTW, I'm also installing unpolished stainless bed strips and a new rear bumper. My goal is to make the truck look more presentable, not turn it into a show piece. Ideas and opinions welcome! |

Re: Line-X Estimate Too High?
Our local Line-X dealer here in chester, va gets 400 for an over the rail job ( short or long bed). The price you got was insane. My brother got his done last week.
If you do, DIY, get a raptor kit from TP Tools. |

Re: Line-X Estimate Too High?
they dont suck, use herculiner its the best. As with anything, the quality is in YOUR preparation. I did mine over labor day weekend and it turned out great and I have had spray on done in the past

I have a run-of-the-mill air compressor and cheap old tech spray gun. Will these do a good job with the spray-on Herculiner? |

Re: Line-X Estimate Too High?
Check into Al's liner. If you can get compressed air, then all you need is a $20 hopper gun...there is no discernable difference between Al's and Linex. Pricing is good.

Re: Line-X Estimate Too High?
I got a quote from Line-X in Tucson for $450 for the basic job and about $625 for UV protectant included. I had a Rhino Liner in my 76 and it was dark gray, but faded to light washed out gray in the Tucson sun in about 1 year - so I guess you do need the UV protectant around here.
Overall, I liked the BedRug I had in my 2000 Silverado best because it covered the open space between the end of the bed and the tailgate - prevents stuff from falling down in that big crack. The BedRug is easy on the knees when you have to crawl around in there. |

Re: Line-X Estimate Too High?
I heard a lot of the DIY bedliners fade rather quickly. Anybody have any long-term experience?

Re: Line-X Estimate Too High?
Couldn't agree more that $800 is way out of line. Line-X shops are franchises. Some franchises have to charge prices set by corporate, but I guess these guys can charge whatever they want. I had a local shop quote me $450 to rebuild my 2GC 2bbl! WTH?
IMO, all brush/roll/spray on bedliners should have UV protectant. If you don't keep the truck locked away most of the time, it's gonna fade eventually no matter where you live. Hey, broey: did you use Herculiner? How did it turn out? Got any pictures? Ace Hardware online is selling it for $75. Bet the LOCAL Ace wants more. Does not mention UV protection, so probably an add-on. Found a place online selling Raptor for $102, says UV protection. Which is better? Brush/roll on sounds good to me. I've painted a lot of houses and it's a fast way to apply paint, plus no overspray. Do the urethane-based DIY products all dry almost immediately like Line-X? |

Re: Line-X Estimate Too High?
On a related note... I brushed the Rust Bullet Standard Formula on a car floor and spot treated a few small repair areas on the outside. It seems to do a good job (only been a year), but it leaves some pretty heavy brush marks. They also have an "Automotive Formula" that is thinner and has more metal in it that is made to spray on. You CAN thin the regular formula, but have to use their thinner, which is expensive.
For the truck, I'd like to use Rust Bullet on the bottom lip that the ends of the bed boards sit on, and also use it on a couple of small dents/scuffs where the paint got knocked off the body. I know the bed liner will cover the brush marks, but regular paint will NOT. So, I'm wondering if I should get the Automotive Formula and buy an HVLP spray gun to apply it, or just brush it on the hidden spots and forget the rest? http://www.rustbullet.com/faqs.asp?id=1 I know a lot of folks swear by POR15, but Rust Bullet can be applied to any surface, rusty or not, and does not fade or peel off in sheets if not applied correctly like I've heard POR15 does. |

Re: Line-X Estimate Too High?
BTW, KQQL IT and 88Jimmy4x4, yours look great! Do the VERTICAL surfaces look as good? You used a brush in the corners and any non-flat areas, then rolled the rest, right?
In my search, I ran across a late model Mustang that a guy did the whole thing in black Line-X! Gives it a stealth look. The new bumper and bed strips are due Tuesday! Time to get off my tail and prep the bed and buy hardware! |
