Question Is it possible?

Well, I guess almost anything is possible, but I digress. Could my truck, a '68 C10 swb stepside which was originally a 6cyl/3ott, have come with a factory installed 4.56 gear?

Re: Is it possible?

I think it would be very possible and would look very cool! Just make it like a Blazer opening. I don't know if a Blazer uses different hardware in the door to support the glass and keep it from flopping around while the door is open. Look at a Blazer and go from there!

Re: Is it possible?

Have you checked the spid and stamping on the pass axle tube? Thats one heck of a gear!

Re: Is it possible?

Nothing on the SPID about the gear, going to verify my RPM at 55 and then reverse engineer the gear using a final drive RPM calculator on the net. Will know more soon.

Re: Is it possible?

3.73 would have been stock. 4.11 was the optional deep ratio. If that truck has factory 4.56 gears they would likely be on the SPID as a 4000 or 9000 series special equipment option aka COPO/fleet. They are listed in the gear code chart for '68 C/10 G/10s as a posi ratio. Did you look for a housing code or pull the cover and count teeth?

Re: Is it possible?

I'll try for a housing code, as the only time I had the cover off I forgot to count the teeth. If there is no code on the housing, I will have to rely on the mph vs rpm vs tire size calculators here on the net.

Re: Is it possible?

Or jack the rear up, put truck in gear (not running), spin the tire by hand and count the revolutions of the drive shaft.

Re: Is it possible?

Counting the drive shaft revolutions and tire revolutions is prolly the easiest. Just remember someone hasto hold the other tire if its not a posi. One revolution on the tire if its posi and two revolutions if its open. Simple and accurate.

Re: Is it possible?

I say pull the cover off, look for the stamp that is on the gears. Then you will know for sure. The axle tube stamp will tell you, but you have no for sure way of knowing if that is correct or not. Could have been swapped out at some time.

Re: Is it possible?

Drove the truck this morning to record the RPM vs MPH and used a calculator online to establish that it is a 3.73 gear. I have 29" tall tires and at 65 the RPM is 2000. Thanks for the input gentlemen. I have to go drive my truck now!
