Gas tank Sending unit w/3 outlets?

Hi all,
I'm redoing my '85 2wd short bed, and I dropped the tank this weekend. And noticed the sending unit has 3 outlets. I'm assuming the 3 are (vent, return, and fuel) I know the fuel goes to the fuel pump, and the vent goes to the carbon canister next to the radiator, which is busted, but where does the return go?
I have installed a sb400 with mech. fuel pump. I need to order a new sending unit, but wasn't sure which one to order.
I'm wanting to eliminate the canister, but can it be vented somewhere else?

Thanks for all you help!

Return is usually on the pump

my 78 has just dif vent cap @ the end of the 5/16th on the firewall
my 79 goes to the canister
3/8 main feed
5/16 vapour from tank to firewall
1/4 unused gas return ,from pump to tank

Thanks Guy's,
I didn't see a extra hole on the fuel pump for a return. When I had my 86 I don't recall a return on that fuel pump either. I put a 350 in that one. Is it possible to run the vent somewhere else besides the canister?

some will have the 1/4 liquid gas return some won't,stock
the vent dosn't go to the pump, only the tank, just use a diff vent like the 78 above the 79
venting at the back may result in "i smell gas,do you have a leak?

Re: Gas tank Sending unit w/3 outlets?

I have the engine (sb400) on the breakin stand at the moment, I pulled the tank to clean it up and replace the sender. I was thinking of just going back with a 2 outlet sender to eliminate the return hose. I have the front end off,and really didn't want to go back to a canister for the vent hose. Trying to figure out where to place the vent hose, and not have the gas smell you mentioned. Maybe run it back to the front with a filter on it, but that may still smell without the charcoal filter.

I don't smell gas with just the vent cap
