hard to fill with gas
I've got a 1974 longbed and it takes forever to fill the tanks (2) Both are 20 gal factory tanks and when I try to fill them the gas splashes back and onto the ground. I have had the tanks out, replaced all of the hoses (vent hoses too) and the only way to fill it is to go really really slow. I'm here in California where they are constantly messing with the pumps, as some seem to work OK when I get out of the area (rural places). Any ideas? Anyone else had this problem? Thanks

Re: hard to fill with gas
Tried every angle to fill. Thought maybe the air pushing through the vent that goes from the top of the tank to the filler neck was pushing the gas back so I tried a hose on the end of the nozzle making it about 6 inches longer and no help.

Re: hard to fill with gas
It always took me forever also but they put new pumps in and no problems with my truck , now with the new pumps it takes forever to fill my Avalanche . Sometimes you just can't win.

Re: hard to fill with gas
I have this exact issue with my '74 stepside. I fill it and the gas comes running back out of the tank.
I have to hold the nozzle at a weird angle on my '81 3/4 ton to get gas into it or the stupid vapor recovery keeps clicking the pump off. I dont have any problems filling my burb, but then again its diesel. I've just learned to live with it. |

Re: hard to fill with gas
i too have this problem and what i have found that is best is to pull the nossel back till it is just past the flapper in the fill and you should be good the other thing to do is turn the nossule to the back of the truck that always works for me

Re: hard to fill with gas
I posted a similar question a few years ago, and basically got laughed out, mostly by those that didn't understand the actual question...
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=441949 I pretty much gave up, and started running my truck to about 1/4 tank, then filling it up with 12 gallons. This gets it to about full on the gauge, just a little under, but no more splashing out problems. I don't ever fill it to "full" anymore, if I wait until the pump clicks off, it's covered in fuel.

Re: hard to fill with gas
I have a hard time filling my 79 C-10 because the dam thing wants to click off repeatedly. I basically have to try crazy angle and try to just get the tip of the nozzle past the flapper and hold the trigger slowly otherwise it will click off.

I have a 79 with dual 20 gallon tanks. No issues filling up here, but when I'm in California, it doesn't matter what I'm driving it's a hassle to pump gas. |

Re: hard to fill with gas
Costco has those stupid pumps. On both of my squares I have too insert it about half-way and turn it sideways.
Have the same problem with my Travelall. No probs with my 55 or 59. Fills up easy. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: hard to fill with gas
By my house its 3.55 but around it about that price. As for filling my truck up it really never slashes unless I hold it weird.

Re: hard to fill with gas
I just experienced this with my 73. I have dual tanks and the Main/Passenger-side tank gives me this problem. I recently tried the Aux/Driver-side tank and surprisingly did not have an issue on fill up. I read somewhere to investigate the Vent tube.

Re: hard to fill with gas
I have problems with getting diesel in my burb. If I try to just start pumping then put the little lock thing on to keep the flow going hole I wash my windsheild it will click off and stop the flow every 3-5 seconds. Even If I sit there an hold the valve open with my hand. Seems to be fine if I get gas at Safeway tho.

The OP didn't describe a clicking off problem, but instead an overflowing problem. If his is like mine, it overflows well before the pump clicks off.

Re: hard to fill with gas
I have the same issue but in Florida and Cali. I though it was due to the small diameter of the fill pipe creating a sort of seal if you will when the whole diameter of the fill pipe is filled with high flowing gas. It then sends me a nice BURP of fuel so I remember what it smells like on my hands. I will go out this weekend and check the vapor line though and post back. While I am in there I will change the vapor line itself to a larger one.
