Door Hinges

Hey Everyone,

Just another question from down under!!

I have got a set of aftermarket hinges for my 1949 4400 truck and they don't seem to fit into the recessed section of the trucks body and it doesn't look like the holes line up either.

Any thoughts? it maybe something something stupid that I am missing.

Thanks everyone for the always insightful information!!

Shane

Re: Door Hinges

Hi andsonsvd,

There are no dumb questions. I am friends with Trently (AUSSIE54) and we have talk about our hindges are different than yours. So that is maybe why they do not fit. The springs are also different in them too. How do they compare to your factory ones? Hope that helps.

Re: Door Hinges

Xpickup probably nailed it in that there are most likely subtle differences between the US version of the truck and the Aussie version.

From experience the ones that are original to the truck can be a pain to put back in at times.

Looks like they are from some other make or model.

Re: Door Hinges

I think the angle makes the new ones look bigger they are about the same size, it seems only the mounting plate is not the right shape.

they are listed as "1947-1955 Chevrolet & GMC Truck"

So I assume they are right?

Thanks Shane

Re: Door Hinges

Silly question but where did you order them from? They look like a 3100 model hinge to me. And if I am reading things right you have a 4400? Not sure whether there's a difference but I would have suspected so.

I'd try a place specializing in the bigger models, e.g. heavychevy.com

Re: Door Hinges

The black ones look like the correct hinges for your truck. Cabs and doors are the same no matter what model. It could be a US model vs Australian model difference. Your old hinges don't look too bad. Have you thought of rebuilding them? Try to determine if the pin size is the same. They are not too hard to rebuild. The hardest part is getting the old pin out.

Re: Door Hinges

Over on stovebolts.com martinsr has a good tech article on an easy way to remove the old pins and install the new. I did my two bad hinges in half an hour (not counting cleaning and painting, just pin removal, drilling for the new bushings and installing the new pins).

Re: Door Hinges

A 4400 should be a 1-1/2 ton truck with the same cab as a 3100. I think I would try rebuilding the original hinges and put the replacements up for sale to someone in your country that has imported a US cab 3100.

Re: Door Hinges

As a note, I was digging through my Master Parts catalog for our years trucks yesterday and noticed for the first time ever that it actually lists 3 different model #'s (for each upper/lower/left/right set) for the hinges for the 3000, 4000 and 6,000 series (the 5000 having a completely different number).

Trouble is it doesn't have pictures so no way of knowing what the differences are, but it does also bear the notation of "optional" next to some and a mention of other parts needed.

Re: Door Hinges

Hey andsonsvd,

The new hinges look like a heavy duty type hinge compared to the old ones.

where did you buy them from?

I just ordered hinges out of classic parts in the us and they were $300 landed at my door, and classic garage in Aus cam back at $540.
