Help with a Tilt Column repair

I bought this column and i want to go through it before i install it in my truck. The first thing i noticed is that the piece of plastic that the turn signal lever bolts to is broke.. the grey piece in the first picture... what is that called? Is there a part number for it?

Also, how do i go about getting the rest of it apart. Mainly the 2 upper pieces off so i can straighten the one out and get ready to paint it.

And one final question, what makes the turn signal cancel and return to off once you turn the wheel? there was a broken spring in there that may have been it? THanks

Re: Help with a Tilt Column repair

the gray piece is the Turn Signal Switch (note that tilt and non-tilt are different) - for tilt, LMC part # 38-4859 $39.95

Not sure how to separate the sections you mention off the top of my head.

Turn signals cancel by a "turn signal cancelling cam" a round plastic piece that is screwed into the back of the steering wheel. (LMC part # 34-0765 $14.95 (for tilt)) (it is not the spring - but the spring you mention, if it looks like a ball point pen spring on steroids, then that is the spring that helps make horn contact and it passes through the cancelling cam.

Re: Help with a Tilt Column repair

Here's a link to how to rebuild a tilt column. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=329008

I bought the tool mentioned in post 16 for the tilt pins and made a puller for the top collar you are asking about from stuff I had lying around . Attached are a couple pics of the puller I made.

I also got a couple of the springs I think you mean from www.classicindustries.com.

Re: Help with a Tilt Column repair

Im trying to remove the outer collar (large "cover" in the middle of this pic) and i cant seem to get it pulled. It keps bending the lip. I am using a 3 jaw gear puller on it.

Re: Help with a Tilt Column repair

The grey cancelling assembly can be replaced easily so if the rest of your turn signal switch is good you may want to just replace the broken part. You will need the little springs that seem to be missing!

The cancel parts that you need are the same as the standard truck column's parts.

I use a medium size screw driver to drive the tin housing off, very carefully! Soak the housing to the casting interface with a good penetrant first. I have not caused any serious damage on the many tilt columns that I have rebuilt.
( Minor marks only that can easily be sanded).

Re: Help with a Tilt Column repair

I bought the grey part on classic industries as well as the other needed parts (springs, indicator ect). The entire switch is in good shape, just dirty like anything haha.

I will try and get the tin off using a screwdriver. Parts just must be rusted together.
