Alternator and power steering don't line up with a water pump.

Picked up 1984 c10 last week with 305/ 3 speed . Its has a long style water pump with 3 grooves pulley. My alternator in on passenger side and don't line up correctly on water pump pulley and power steering pulley is way off as well. Can I just swap out to short style water pump or is there any other solutions? thank you

Re: Alternator and power steering don't line up with a water pump.

Assuming you have A/C and are using all 3 pulleys, I think you need a different water pump, but I would go to the parts store and measure the new water pump before you buy it.

If you do need a different pulley, don't buy an aluminum pulley because they tend to slip, in my experience. I would stick with OEM pulley (used, since they are no longer available OEM) - I got one off Ebay since I have a 454 and used pulleys are hard to find around here.

Posting a pic here of your setup might help others analyze your situation.

No a/c. I have a power steering bracket off 77 c10 350 on it. Just bought power steering pump and alternator last week both were totally shot when I got my truck. Can anyone post pictures of their stock v belt set ups on 305 or 350 please. Just trying to bring it back to life and make sure everything where it should be.

The power steering goes on driver side and is run by one belt and I thing the alternator by another. I have the pull you may need off my truck I will try to take picture. Does your truck have air pump on passinger side.

no air pump. I am thinking I might have to buy big block brakes for alt and ps , but I am not sure if i can use same power steering pump or have to buy older type with a stud in a back. CFR performance brackets alone would run $120 and I wish I can find a cheaper way to solve this problem. lol

Re: Alternator and power steering don't line up with a water pump.

For quick reference, if nobody posts a 305 set up short block setup, I would look for a 305 in a junkyard or maybe for sale somewhere - then check the pulley and belt configuration. With no a/c I think you only need a 2 groove pulley - but somebody can correct me on that. Maybe what you need is a 2 groove pulley - which should be easy to find in a junkyard or ebay.

Can somebody post a pic of their no a./c 305? A 2 groove pulley, if that is what you need, is easy to come by.

Re: Alternator and power steering don't line up with a water pump.

power steering should line up with second groove from rear crank and rear water pump pulley grooves, and alter. should line up with next one forward , this is on a long pump. with a 3 groove crank and 2 groove water pump pullies
i use the aluminum pullies and never have issues???
this is on my chevelle but you get the idea.

Re: Alternator and power steering don't line up with a water pump.

My power steering pump bracket is off 77 c10 and it looks exactly like yours., but my pump looks smaller. My new pump didn't have a stud in a back like old one did. What size is that mounting bolt on a header and grey spacer on a head bolt. Is there any way you can provide me with bolt sizes for that power steering pump bracket. Thanx for that picture too. Really helpfull.

Thanx again. one more question. Where did you get your belts? Do you remember part #. I got new ones from autozone and they seem too be too short perhaps.

Re: Alternator and power steering don't line up with a water pump.

Can I use big block alternator top bracket on a small block to get my alternator alignment corrected? Will I have to use any other parts of big block to make it work or just upper alt bracket. I also heard on here something about using washers or spacers, but have no idea how it works or where to place washers at.

Why don't YOU post a picture(s) of your setup? Then ask your questions
Makes a lot more sense.

Btw, forget about a short water pump. You think you have problems now, you will never get things lined up with a short pump

Re: Alternator and power steering don't line up with a water pump.

If I had a camera I would of posted pics by now. Got the same bracket as in a picture posted above in this post. Just need to know bolt sizes and spacer size. If anyone can help, please do.
