Stuck Front Driveshaft

I am in the process of installing a 4inch Tuff Country Lift.

My front driveshaft slip joint is stuck. I managed to get it to extend a few inches with a ratchet strap and a sledge hammer and I can now finish putting the new springs on. The question is, Should I remove the shaft and try to free it up, or should I just grease the hell out of it and run it as-is?

Re: Stuck Front Driveshaft

Take it off, clean it with solvent, unscrew the cap that holds the seal, pull it apart, wire brush it or what ever it takes, grease it and put it back on

Its not that much work. If your burnt out from doing the spring install, take a break and clean it up and put it on a few days later or whatever

Good time to check your u joints too

Sounds reasonable. Can you describe a little bit more about this cap that has to be unscrewed and the seal? I would imagine I need a new seal. Do the regular parts stores stock these?

That cap there where the shaft slides in unscrews, gotta unscrew the cap so the slip shaft can slide all the way out,. I could unscrew it with my hand rapped around it. Might need a pipe wrench with a rag rapped around it so you dont mark it up to bad

I gotta replace my front pinion seal so I have to take my front shaft off too so I can clean and paint it, if I can get my butt in gear tomarrow. My splines are kinda loose and probably need a new slip yoke welded on eventually

Re: Stuck Front Driveshaft

Some of them unscrew, and some pop off like the one in the picture above. The ones that pop off are a pain to get on and off. I made a tool out of a piece of oak that slips behind the seal/cap. Sort of a U cut into the end of the piece of wood. That way i can hammer on the wood to pop the seal/cap off.
I wouldn't use a drive shaft that dosent slide nice.

This one has little taps that fold.

Little taps? Huh? My yoke looks similar to that one but does not seem to have that cap on the end.

Re: Stuck Front Driveshaft

Here ya go, you can buy a new cap and seal which ever type you need

scroll down to the caps. you can measure what you have and get the right on
http://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/c461...iveshafts.html

Mine is larger diameter than the above pic then tapers down and the serk is in the center instead of at one end

I see Dennys has some good spicer U joints too at a good price. I just bought a Fed/mogul precission U Joint for my rear. I should have ordered a spicer.

Ah now I see the tabs. Couldn't see on an iPhone. My shaft actually had a screw on cap. It was just really covered in crud. The U-joint on the axle side is toast, so it looks like the whole shaft is coming out for 3 new U-joints.
