Door jam switch (dome light)

Did these trucks come with them? Mine has no sign of them, and I thought it would be something nice to have.

What have you guys done with your dome light? I have a switch on the dash to operate it, but I would like to have it working when I open the door too.

Thanks for the help!!

Re: Door jam switch (dome light)

I picked up a set of mid 60's chevy courtesy lights that I plan to put under the dash on door jamb switches. My dome light still operates off the headlight switch.

Did this mod a few months ago, and I love it. Wasn't much at all for cost, either. Here's a link for the switches I used.

Re: Door jam switch (dome light)

I was just looking at this switch.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/290755066289...84.m1438.l2649

The location I was thinking of was near the door striker area.. You can drill a hole there and get behind it on the drivers side where the wire runs thru.

Re: Door jam switch (dome light)

I just used a rocker switch on the dash, since my truck had a ton of space on the pop-out panel where the heater control is. I moved my lights and wipers to toggles there as well. Simple, but not as convenient as your plan tho.

I just installed the courtesy light set and wired the dome light to work in conjunction with them thru the door switches as well as the headlight switch.

I currently have a switch on the dash, but I almost never use it.

Re: Door jam switch (dome light)

I di the switch thimg on my truck except i put the switchnon the door opening near the latch facing the door. I believe a rubber bumper stop originally went there, had to ream the hole just a bit and added a nut onnthe backside of the switch to attach it. Im also going to add under dash couresy lights that are going to work off the headlight switch. The dome light has a constant hot and the switch works the ground. Also adde one on the passenger side, just ran the same ground that would also trip the dome light.

I have a set of those door jamb switches--Got them through YearOne or the local parts store, don't remember.
The one thing I don't like about installation (which is the way most guys do it), is that it has an exposed wire between the firewall/cowl area and the fender.
What I will do is drill a hole in the kick panel, high up, and then drill the door jamb switch, and fish a piece of stiff wire through the holes, use it to grab the lead to the wiring harness, and then pull it through to the inside of the cab to tie into the under-dash wiring harness.

Re: Door jam switch (dome light)

I installed the door jam switches and wired up courtesy lights under the dash. The lights are good but the switches are inconsistent when I open the door.

I can wiggle the switches and the lights come on. Next time they may work as intended. Is there anything I can do to make them a little more consistent? Silicone spray? dry graphite? WD40?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Do you have pics of your switch install?

I would probably use the graphite for a lube because its dryer that WD40.

Re: Door jam switch (dome light)

I occasionally use the dome light that operates on the headlight switch but.....

A Pelican ball cap clip light sits on my visor. It gets used more often than not/in preference to the dome light...no wireing or holes to drill...and if I accidently leave it on for three days, the truck still starts!

When the door opens though the switch doesn't always make good contact to complete the ground. Pepboys switch, not the most expensive but they are all brass. No plastic.

I wired in two inexpensive license plate lamps I got at Autozone and the dome light to the switches. Nice light in the truck when it works! I'm thinking about getting the interior light fader that LMC sells.

If I can get my switches to work consistently it will be sweet!

61_FL_Apache, I can take a couple pictures of the install if you want to see them.

Now that I have a decent looking floor I'm planning to add the courtesy lights as well. I also have the LMC clear dome light lens and it really lights up the interior at night, compared to the original.

Re: Door jam switch (dome light)

I ran a couple strips of that new 3m double stick style LED white lighting, under the dash and wired it to the dome light. It works great.
Tip;
Use some alcohol on a clean rag and clean the spot where you are going to mount the strips, then attach.
Because my interior paint is blue the lighting looks blue-ish even though they are white.
