can you put a 73-87 short box on a 56 frame?

so my old stepside box for my napco build was shot so i sold it off and have a chance to pickup a solid 81 chevy shortbox box only and was wondering would it match up to the original 56 frame that I have with minimal mods needed or no mods needed to work?

it's a chevy, they used the same basic box from 54 thru 87
stock 81 fenders and steps wouldn't look right on your 56
and the 81 bolt pattern wouldn't match the 56 fenders
but if you have a drill that can be easily fixed
the step side beds all mount the same, wood floor, metal strips and metal x-bars

awesome thanks ogre but one more question if thats the case what about a fleetside box ? they should be the same length as the stepside arnt they in that year or is the fleet longer?
