New geezer here

Hey guys, hope I am posting this in the right place, but picked up a '54 short bed yesterday. Already have 5 or 6 cars, and am tickled pink over this 'new' truck. I bleed bowties and have been a Chevy vanner since the 70s, have had 6 early Chevy vans, a few Chevelles, El Caminos, and Vegas, and still have a 65 Chevy van and now the 54 truck.
I will search the archives but will have a ton of questions until I get the hang of this great site and get to know my truck better. I have and want to put a 350/350 set up in the truck and would really like to convert to five lug setup since I will have to do away with my stock rear end. I am retired, so needless to say, money is tight and I am looking for advice on a budget build. A Mustang II from suspension is out of the budget. My main target is reliability and comfort if that is possible. Power steering and A/C are on top of the list. But first I need advice on rear end, external gas tank, V8 engine and tranny mounts. Should V8 go in where the six banger is or should it be moved back?
Anyway, enough questions for now. I look forward to joining in on a great shared interest of vintage iron.

Re: New geezer here

Well, after much thought and direction searching, I have decide to go with an S10 frame. While taking my 54 apart to start semi-resto jobby on it. I was going to keep the straight axle and disc brake it. But after much addition, the total was making it lean more toward the S10 frame conversion. Got the 54 down to the last body bolts and the S10 is down to the bare frame. I post pics later today falling asleep here.

Re: New geezer here

Welcome Greg. This was my first truck build and this site is where you want to be. Wealth of information gives you so many different options you never knew were available.

I have a '49. I completely restored the frame, suspension, and all the parts. In the end as happy as I am with the frame, I will eventually pull a S10 frame like you are and go that route. Good decision by your part.

Frame come with a motor in it? I tucked a 292 in mine with a 5 speed - if I go to the S10 frame the L6 is coming haha.

Love to see some pictures.

Re: New geezer here

Next step is to get the cab into the garage and sitting on the frame. Haven't exactly figured how I am going to do that just yet. Solo act, here. Being that it is raining, I am going to put the 79 Camaro rearend in it today. But have plenty to keep me bleeding, I mean busy.

Welcome Greg, to the site. Always good to see another old Geezer here who loves "old iron". Great people, plus much helpful info. Neat truck you have, and will enjoy watching it come together.

Re: New geezer here

Okay been working my buns off. Got an S10, got it stripped, stripped down the '54. So far so good. Got the S10 for $500, sold the 2.8 and tranny for $450, the sold the '54 frame for $250. Picked up a '79 Camaro rear end and got it installed. Got the 2 inch front spacers, ordered the V8 offset engine mounts. Going to replace the upper control bushings today. Rolled the cab into the garage and set it down on the S10 frame. Made my body mounts utilizing fabbed S10 donut bushings. So far, I have been flying solo. Getting there with the help of my trusty engine hoist. Once I get the front cap on and everything aligned, I will weld the body mounts in place and then I will have the most intimidating part behind me. I'll transfer some pics and load them here.

BTW: is there a way to load pics directly from MY COMPUTER without having to put them on PHOTOBUCKET first?
