Original License Plate Score!!!

Hey guys,
I have been searching and searching for an original '66 tag for my C10, and I happened to find one last night at the local swap meet! I've came across alot of them but never in this good of shape. So I just wanted to show it off lol.

Great score on the tag!, I live in kansas and I've been looking for a farm tag for Kingfisher County, Oklahoma, for my 1966 C-10. Maybe you can give me a place to call or look.

Awesome!! When I bought my '66 the guy told me that he had the original '66 tags that had been stored under the seat of the truck since they were taken off for new tags in '67!!! I'm gunna clear coat them and run them!

I found one on ebay as well. But it's for a passenger car. Still looking for the "Truck" plate. It will make due for the time being.

Re: Original License Plate Score!!!

Awesome stuff guys! I love the look of the older plates! The new ones just look out of place on anything older. I'm gonna run by there again tonight and get his number for you guys. He is a really nice older man. I didn't get the county right, I live in Grady county which would by GY I believe, but it works for me. I'm at a toss up tho... Do I restore the plate or leave it in original condition... any input??

I would give it a good coat of wax and leave it alone. Some states will confiscate restored plates if the authorities don't approve of the results.

I hung on to my original 1963 black California plates when I left the state. It’s fun once in a while shooting a photo with them back on the truck just to confirm it’s the same truck. In the photo below its even wearing the worn out original dealer frame. Unfortunately they can only be used in my driveway! I don't think WA state would be too cool regarding running around with CA plates mounted.

There are a lot of very cool images on this thread.

Does anyone know where a guy could get his hands on a pair of '66 Missouri truck plates? I've tried Ebay and a google search unsuccessfully.

Re: Original License Plate Score!!!

I found a matching pair of TN 1966 plates. One went on the truck and the other (which has 1968 registration decals) went on my 68 Galaxie.

Hey, theastronaut nice find. Got 1 66 plate from a neighbor of yours for my stepside--has my initials; already had a 2nd one that came on my wideside. I understand that, barring certain problems to be deciphered when we send in application & a scan of our tags, we can register/license these tags to our pickups!

Re: Original License Plate Score!!!

My 65 still has the plates from the early 80's that I put on it when I moved up here.
They are perfect for the generation of memories that I think back to fondly.

Re: Original License Plate Score!!!

In Idaho they call it the "Year of Manufacture" program and you only have to have the back plate. They don't even give you two registration stickers. There is a web site I found that will make any plate you want to match originals or be whatever you want it to be. Idaho says it has to be original and unrestored, but that company says their customers "do it all of the time". I know a local guy that painted his original plate to match his truck and he hasn't gotten any grief over it. When I questioned him about it, he told me I was the first one to say anything. He even got pulled over for another reason and they ran his plate and told him what it originally was on, but wasn't questioning it.

Re: Original License Plate Score!!!

Yep, there's a list on SCDMV's website of plates that aren't allowed going by the starting letters. These are aren't on that list so they'll go back on it! You do have to send a picture of the tag to DMV for them to make sure that it's in good enough condition. Supposedly you can't restore them either, I'm just gunna send low quality pics so it will be hard to tell...

Here's one I'm making for my VW. The "VW" prefix isn't on the can't-register list, so maybe they won't catch that it isn't original. Fingers crossed!

And a '66 sample plate with a frame from my hometown VW dealership. This one can't be registered.

Some wall hanger plates in my bedroom.
