Truck keeps eating brake shoes
The rear drums on my truck go through shoes like there's no tomorrow. Like in a few hundred miles. Truck hasn't been through deep mud either. What is going on? Or just I just throw in the towel and let the rear brakes go.

Re: Truck keeps eating brake shoes
Are the fronts working at all? That's about the only way I could see both rear wearing out quickly and at the same time.

Re: Truck keeps eating brake shoes
A bad rubber line holding some residual pressure making them drag?

Re: Truck keeps eating brake shoes
I have a '72 VW SuperBeetle that had internal brake-fluid swelling of the rear rubber lines due to age. Caused the lines to retain pressure and keep the rear brakes slightly engaged even after the pedal was released. Only vehicle, of many, that I've ever seen this problem on though,...perhaps yours' has the same.
You can check for heat in the drums after a fairly long drive with the back of your hand. Hope this helps! Good luck, man! Todd.

Re: Truck keeps eating brake shoes
Ive seen it as well. Swelled so bad it wouldnt even allow pressure to pass. Only found it trying to bleed brakes. Im assuming you have the original rubber hose. Id think it suspect.

No, not on the outside.
Just replace them,...they're relatively cheap. Todd.

Re: Truck keeps eating brake shoes
While the swelled brake hose has merit, in fact if in doubt change them. Question, how are the drums?
I had front drums on an old Impala that would eat shoes every 6 mos, until the drums were replaced.

Re: Truck keeps eating brake shoes
Just to lend yet even more credibility to the brake line theory. I've personally never seen it with the rear brakes, but I have seen it with the fronts a few times.
The other possible issue is the brake fluid itself. I imagine you've bled the brakes, but have you REALLY bled the brakes? Enough that you've flushed all the old fluid out and replaced it with new fluid? The brake fluid will absorb moisture over time and lower the boiling point. It can get to the point that any heat in the system will cause the fluid to expand, which creates more pressure, which creates more friction, which creates more heat and thus creates even more pressure, friction, heat, ect. You can bleed the initial pressure off, but the cycle will repeat until you remove the moisure by completely flushing the brake system of all the old fluid.
