exhuast ?
i was curious on what gains i would get if i put an x pipe in my truck its a 1973 k20 with a built 406 sbc and roughly 500hp but to be safe ill say 475 my truck had 2inch duals on it which are WAY too small and the preformance suffers greatly from it i am putting 3 inch duals on it with no mufflers and was just wondering if i should put an x pipe or some kind of equalizer pipe connecting the two pipes? will i gain anything by doing this?

Re: exhuast ?
ive read that there are gains in having an equalizer pipe of some kind, from what i understand that exhaust will build up uneven pressures on a true dual set-up because every revolution the engine has two cylinders on each bank that hit back to back such as #5 and #4 & #6 causing more pressure on that side and less on the other. the pipe needs to be installed before the mufflers if using them, which i would, and i've seen that flowmaster has done some pretty extensive research on flow with crossover pipes, and there is no real disernable advantage to an x pipe over an h pipe unless youre running a small cube, high rpm, high hp engine mostly in race application, based on those specs id say road course racing. also an x pipe will give a slightly higher pitched sound, and depending on how the x pipe is made it can add wicked turbulence to your exhaust. im going with 2.5 inch and an H pipe on my 86 with a mild street 355, im guessing 350-375hp.

X-pipe period. Otherwise you need 2.75 true duals for that engine and nobody makes those kits anymore. So you need the x pipe on a three inch system to keep your low end. It will make you quieter just a bit but your biggest gain is mufflers. Those have to hold the flow Posted via Mobile Device

Re: exhuast ?
That article exemplifies what I'm saying... small cube high rpm motor. If you're going x pipe look into the differences in styles boxed vs two 90s welded together vs 4 pipes cut n welded into an x they will all have their own turbulence properties say what you will about flowmasters buy check out their FAQ about x vs h
