1996 G30 1 ton GMC Van 6.5 Diesel
This just came to me 2 days ago. It is a 96 1 ton van with under 100,000 miles. The insurance company totalled it after a wire harness meltdown under the dash. It was $3000 to replace!!!! A few parts have been lifted from it and almost everything else is available with the exception of the OD 4L80E and the rear heater. The diesel is supposed to run just like it should. I don't know if it would start with a battery in there or not. I don't even know if the key or ignition switch is still in there. It did drive in to my mechanic's shop. The previous owner had paid $7500 for it in 2002.

Is that a computer controlled diesel engine?

Yes it is, and that wasn't damaged in the melt-down either.

Hey 68, I just read that you want 20mpg but not without your TH400. That is why I am keeping the transmision in this van. It is the 4L80e which is the modern TH400 with OD. Because it is a diesel it has a stand alone computer that controls the shifts and lockup. If it was from a gas engine the computer is part of the engine computer and you would have lot's of $$'s to make it work. This is supposed to be a bolt in project. I will soon find out.

da-burb,
Just a question...........wouldn't that set up (4L80E stand-alone from a diesel mated to a gas motor) shift at incorrect times? The reason I ask this is diesel engines have the "power range" at much lower rpms then gas engines. What this causes is shifting much too soon for gas engines. Can these factory stand alones be re-programed for differen shift points?? Just a thought..... |

Not intending to step on any ones toes, but I believe the tranny can be re-programmed to whatever shift points you desire.
