67 bagged and want a 5.3, but need help!

I have a 67 laying body on 22/24, 2.5in Z, 350/400t, and so on. I really like the idea of a possible 20mpg average so thought Id 5.3 it. Ive got leads on 2004ish 5.3 auto trans for $1400. I have 73-87 frame mounts and a custom 3spd 350/400t tranny mount, tranny tunnels raised. What parts do I need to drop it in and get it mounted besides trimming the frame? Will the tranny and oil pan clear easily on a bagged 67-72?

Re: 67 bagged and want a 5.3, but need help!

adapter plates for the motor mounts, drill new holes and move trans mount to new spot (depending on where engine sits), wiring harness, pcm, tac and pedal IF its dbw, driveshaft cut to length, any misc sensors that were damaged or not working, fuel pump (possibly new tank depending on choice of pump and current tank style).

Thats a start, but there are things like gauges, shifter etc that may need work depending on what parts you choose.

Re: 67 bagged and want a 5.3, but need help!

probably a good idea, that guy was smoking freebase if he thinks its worth that.

car-part dot com
you can't not find one on there prob 1/2 of us have sourced them on there.

side note....the freebase thing was a weird reference, too many 80's movies this weekend I guess...

Motor adapter plates are pricey. I built my own, I can give you the measurements if you want.

Re: 67 bagged and want a 5.3, but need help!

Thats a salvage yard, said they may get another tomorrow or it may be a while it depends. He thought it had had 135,000 which isnt too bad. He said theres a month warranty but I can hear it before they pull it. Said $1100 if it had had the 135,000 on the 2002.

IF it were me, I would get a newer motor and throw the DBC intake on it( if that is what you want), also call LKQ, that is where I bought my motor from. I got a 4.8 with 7K miles for under 600. it has plenty of power for me and it gets good MPG.

Its not showing any but you have to search a specific year and model. Are the prices you posted engines only for sale or everything?

Re: 67 bagged and want a 5.3, but need help!

imo he's still asking too much for it.
Besides at 135k its not the engine that I'm worried about....it probably has a 4l60e behind it, which at that high mileage doesn't exactly have much life in front of it when put behind a v8 in a performance car.

I just blew up another 4l60e....in a freaking 4.3 blazer...

Re: 67 bagged and want a 5.3, but need help!

The more I sit and think the more I like the fresh rebiult 350/400t thats in it, basically I wanted the 20ish mpg the 5.3 may get over my stock 350's 13mpg lol.

Well cant find my engine anywhere. Im going to keep my 350 and cam it up and put taller than 4.11 gears. I should get decent mileage I hope.

Re: 67 bagged and want a 5.3, but need help!

Consider Puting a 700 or 200 4 speed tranny, keep the 3.73's and you can get better mileage then. Or throw aftermarket EFI on your 350 with the 4speed auto.

Also the prices I showed we're for a 2005 only the motor. You can call them and see what they will do for and entire pull out. If it were me, I would go for a 04-07obs and under 50k.

I've got a cheap used 200-4r if you decide to go that way.
Needs freshening up is all.

Re: 67 bagged and want a 5.3, but need help!

I searched LKQ, Bayless in Springfield and they have nothing in a complete swap. He said call tomorrow because theyre going to an auction and may come across something. Its not that I dont want to try a 5.3 but maybe its a sign becuase I cant find one anywhere.

Re: 67 bagged and want a 5.3, but need help!

did you look at Tahoes and Suburbans also not just trucks?

Since you called them, they might not. most recyclers pull the motors and trannys with low mileage and rack them to sell them as replacements.

Re: 67 bagged and want a 5.3, but need help!

I searched them all, but when I called I said any year 5.3.

Ok I need help lol. I got a friend with a 2002 Tahoe wrecked(bodyless), 5.3 4wd setup with 82,000 miles. I got him from $1400 to 1250 for engine to tcase or 2100 to $1750 for the roller 4x4 no body. I then asked if I came with $1100 if hed ask me to leave. He said he would do $1100 and sell it with a 2wd tranny. Im wanting to jump on it but should I or should I keep looking?

The one close to your house sounds like a good deal.. however if it doesn't work out email Tanner at brautoparts@gmail.com. Tell him that Mark gave you his name and e-mail. He treated me right on more than one deal. Good luck...
