What's a 396 worth??
Am looking at a rebuilt and running 396 w/400 turbo and transfer case. All were rebuilt at the same time and owner says they have about 30,000 miles on them. Truck was rolled, that is why he is selling them. All brackets ps, etc. come with it. Wanting to put the whole setup in my 67 4x4. It's supposed to be a 1970 engine. Any ballpark prices on this combo? Engine is still in truck and sounds good.

what is he asking?
I would hate to put a price on it, but BB stuff is always expensive, with him recently rebuilding it, he knows the value, I hope you end up getting a good deal.

396
Still, the setup is in a 73-74 1/2 ton, have to buy the whole truck, will not part out. $1500.00 is the price. The truck has some good parts on it, like tilt, tack dash, ralley wheels etc. not to mention the 4x4 set-up.

I think that is a awesome deal, motor, trans and transfer case, and some sellable parts how can you go wrong, I wouldn't snooze on that one,I'd give him the 1500 poor guy just rolled his truck and now he's basiclly giving it away

I have to agree with the rest. The $1500 doesn't sound too bad. I have a rebuilt 454 and 400 Turbo trans with about 20,000 mile or so on the pair. It would have to take around $1500 just to talk me out of the pair of them (without the rest of the truck). I put close to $3000 in getting them rebuilt and that was doing some of my own labor on the engine.

It sounds like a good deal, but it's either not a 396,or a 70 motor...no such thing. 70 was a 402...probably not an issue with most people, just raises the question of "does he know what he's talking about"?? Either way, if it runs good, it's still a fair price.

Class of 69, He did mention, now that you said it, that it was actually a 402. Didn't they make the 396 in 70? Is the 402 actually a bored 396? Don't know a whole lot about the BB's and all the different years they were in. But do know i'd like to have one. Also thanks to everyone who replied. Its always nice to have some different opinions cause i know some of you guys as indicated have bought and sold some of these. I have seen the price of the crate motors and they are way out of my budget. Thanks again

That's a deal - local machine shop told me I should have ready $2500-$3000 for a 396. They're getting hard to come buy.
I know the 1970 Camaros/chevelles/novas had "396's" but were actually 402's. 1970 was the last year for the 396 in Camaros.
