NEED TRACTION, 15x12 7BS???? 600hp+ need help!!!

Hey guys some of you may know i finished up my turbo motor in my 68 STEPSIDE and i am desparate for traction lol...

I am wanting to run as wide as possible wheel/tire combo without sticking outside the wheel wells like crazy lol... I dont care about cutting box and making tubs

Truck is running 76 5x5 pattern chevy front end and rear end (with custom trailing arms).... I think the axle is a bit wider than the 67-72, not sure tho...

This truck will see the track maybee twice a year....

Thinking of running:

15x12 wheel with 7" BS Offset +6.00mm on the rear.... MCKEY THOMPSON 31X16.50-15LT ET STREET OR 31X16.00R15LT SPORTSMAN

15x8 4.5" BS on the front with MCKEY THOMPSON 26X10.00R15LT SPORTSMAN

ANY ADVICE, SUGGESTIONS, PICTURES AND SPECS OF YOUR SETUP.... its all welcome!

Thanks!

Re: NEED TRACTION, 15x12 7BS???? 600hp+ need help!!!

12" wide on a stepper ain't happenin' without some cutting. I have 18x12's on mine with 7" bs and had to cut out the fender lip and the inside of the bed. I'm running a stock width '69 12 bolt which is narrower than the '71-up rears, but that doesn't change the fact that these steppers don't have a whole heck of a lot of room in the wheelwell to tuck a 12" wide wheel. I gave myself a little wiggle room with the tubs in case I wanted to run a wider wheel or narrow my rearend later on.

How much more narrow is the pre 71 rear? Cutting doesnt bother me a bit..

I really want to make sure im not sticking outside the wheel well alot or hitting it.... so backspacing is my biggest concern cuz there is alot of room till i get to the frame

Thanks for the pictures and info! Your setup fits nice!

Re: NEED TRACTION, 15x12 7BS???? 600hp+ need help!!!

I believe it's like 3/4" on each side, but I'm not positive. I also don't know if the 71/72 rears are the same as the 73-87's, so that is something else to consider. Searching this forum will get you a solid answer. I just broke out the 'ole tape measure and did a little figuring to find what I needed to do. I do know that 7" won't be enough b.s. with the rear you're running. Cutting my fender lip out gave me a 1/2" and would have rubbed/cut my tires had I not cut it out. I wanted my tires sitting almost flush with the rear fenders, not sunk in too far and definitely not sticking out.

Ok thanks man!

IDK how much backspacing they can put into wheels but it looks like I might be buyng a set of drag radals to fit my current wheels for now...

Then buy a 9" and cutting it down and buildng a 4 link... didnt plan on this for a while though lol, prolly try to get it done this winter...

I didn't have to cut anything to run a 12'' wide wheel on mine. Not saying you want have to guess i was lucky.
15x12 wheel with 7'' backspacing and 325 50 15 drag radials

Re: NEED TRACTION, 15x12 7BS???? 600hp+ need help!!!

Hopefully 1BADLS1tuner will luck out like you did. There was no way mine was going to fit with the same setup. I couldn't even set my bed down on the frame with the wheels on. I'm running a 335/30/18, which is around 13.5" total width with the tire inflated on the wheel. Got any close up pics of your setup?

Okay, that makes me feel a little better! I was wondering how there could be that much of a difference in two similiar year models and you didn't have to cut the bed

Man, that looks MEAN!!! what drop are you running in back? I just mocked mine all up this afternoon before I take it to paint and I need to bring mine down a couple more inches at each end so it sits more like what you have going on. I'm currently just using a 6" drop spring in the back with 2.5" spindles and 2" spring in front.

Re: NEED TRACTION, 15x12 7BS???? 600hp+ need help!!!

I run 12 x 15 on a '68 stepside. I have mini tubs but the big change I made was to widen the bed.

You think that will look strange? Put a straight edge on the truck door and you will see that the rear fender sits in an inch and a quarter. I widened the bed that amount each side, gaining two and a half inches. I reworked the rear corner so that it takes a standard tailgate.

The truck looks great, "tougher" than standard and avoids that overtubbed look than some pro streeters have.

I have no pics at present but can get some.

Thanks man
When this pic was took it had 5'' drop springs in the rear with close too a 2 '' block under the rear. Since then the blocks have been removed. And in the front it's the same as what you have 2 1/2'' and 2''.

Thanks man. The rear is stock 68 stuff stock length.
As for the suspension set up all stock other than drag shocks on all four corners. hopfully gonna change that over winter with coil overs on rear.

Hey brandon when you put the coilovers on can you let us know what you went with and some part numbers/spring rates, thanks and nice truck.
i am running 12" wide with hoosier 29x15.5 but now that i have seen the pic of your rear end i am more confident about what tire to run on my other wheels for the drags.
