67-72 and 73-88 interchange
I found a '74 that has a good 350 and trans really close to my work (down the street) and was going to look at it tomorrow. What I was wondering is what besides the engine and trans will interchange? Obviously not the interior, I'm talking more chassis. Since my truck is still missing parts I'd like to use as much as possible off the truck. I know the front suspension is similar, will the shocks interchange?
I did a search and didn't find any info, so if I missed a thread about it feel free to call me blind! Thanks! |

Re: 67-72 and 73-88 interchange
You can use the entire front end suspension and steering. You can do this by swapping everything including the crossmember, or just the control arms, spindles/brakes, and steering components to include the steering box. You can also get use the rear brakes if you swap to 5 lug axles. The key to all of these parts is they are much less expensive and more readily available at you local parts house.
Also, check out this thread for good info on front end swaps: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...68&postcount=4

Re: 67-72 and 73-88 interchange
Thanks for the link, that's how I found the 6-lug disk kit, wish I could afford it. I already have 5 6lug rallys so I'm gonna stick with 6lug, especially since I already have all the stuff to rebuild my front end. Was more interested in if the power steering box or the brake booster and master would work, but some part comparison on Oreilly's website shows they have different pitman arms, and the boosters are different. Oh well, trying to keep the budget down! Sticking with manual brakes and steering for now I guess.

Not to be an ass, but if you aren't wanting swap to swap to 5 lug I don't see the point to this post... I'm pretty sure none of the stuff will work unless you swap the whole crossmember.

Re: 67-72 and 73-88 interchange
If you are trying to keep your budget down, I suggest buying that truck for parts and swapping the cross member, control arms, spindles, and other components. Swap your rear axles out. You can sell you 6 lug rally's to get 5 lugs. I am doing the swap on mine, and if I didn't have a nice set of aftermarket rims I would be doing the 5 lug conversion.
What vendor did you find the disk brake conversion you were thinking about buying?

Re: 67-72 and 73-88 interchange
Here's where I found the kit: http://www.mcgaughystore.com/product...evy-Truck.html
I already have all the rebuild stuff for the front end, and honestly I am having no luck selling the things I need to sell to fund the project, so I'm not gonna try and sell more stuff. I was trying to find a way to justify getting that truck, getting enough parts off of it to make it worth it. |

With that kit you still have to purchase the spindles. I have heard nothing but good things about there products. Purchasing a McGaughy kit for my truck here pretty soon myself.

Re: 67-72 and 73-88 interchange
yea so far thankfully everything I have to rebuild the front end doesn't conflict with either the drop spindles or the the disc kit, but it adds another $500 to the budget... so I'm waiting for now on the brakes. gonna cost me $120 for the parts to rebuild the drums, or about $600 for the drop spindles and the disc kit shipped. If I wind up finding it in the budget I'll spring for the discs. Long ways to go for that though...
