build thread 1995 gmc yukon

I bought this truck to give it a paint job and put a 400 in it because it is knocking right now.

the interior is nice but missing a few pieces and the body needs to be straightened out and painted

it is pretty much rust free except for one spot that seems to have rusted from the outside because of some running boards that were installed on the truck

it needs just little touches here and there but I want a boat and I think that this would pull really nice with a 400 in her

Re: build thread 1995 gmc yukon

today I took the crank and rods out of the block and decided that I did not like the .003 clearance that was in one of the rod bearings so I am gonna have the crank miked and probably ground 10 over on the rods and 30 over on the mains

Re: build thread 1995 gmc yukon

found out that the crank was 30 over on the rods and had standard sized bearings. it would have knocked like a woodpecker if I would have used the block without sending it to the machine shop

I got off easy with this motor. all I had to buy was a re-ring kit and a cam kit. the cam I am using is an rv cam 420 intake 443 exhaust. the cank did not need to be ground and the cylinders honed out and did not need to be bored

the specs on the block and crank are the block is 30 over making it a 406. the crank is 30 under on the rods bearings and 20 under on the mains

here are some pics of the crank, cam and block as I start to put it together

Nice start/project...i have the chrome version of those wheels, which I hate because they're pitted bad. What a pita to sand them down, but they're now matte and look pretty good. Not a fan of the tails, what color are you going with?

I am gonna go with the original color of the truck because I dont want to paint the door jambs or the roof. I am thinking of adding pearl to the light blue and doing the dark blue in black covered with a translucent dark blue pearl.

I am gonna paint the front grill dk blue and the mirrors

I kind of want to do dk blue racing stripes across a cowl hood

Sounds good. I know about the pain of the roof and jambs, went from gold to black was a nightmare. I have a high respect for bodymen now, lol.

Are you running TBI on a 400? Is that an aftermarket manifold? Looks good so far

Re: build thread 1995 gmc yukon

well I have it running and have all the leaks taken care of. I am in the process of draining all the fluids and I found that a u joint in the rear end had come apart and took a chunk out of the yoke. the previous owner beat the driveshaft into submission so needless to say I put a used driveshaft and yoke in it with new u joints

Re: build thread 1995 gmc yukon

Are you using the heads off your 350 on the 400? Any trouble with the steam holes?

I had a 400 in my truck with Edelbrock RPM heads and it has never ran better than with that motor.I had a carburetor on it so I could run a cam and it really woke that truck up.

I then put a 290 hp 350 in it and when this engine wears out I am going back to a 400.
