Easy questions for a seasoned Burb owner...(GMC)
I am a new burb owner, so I am trying to figure all this out, but finding GMC info can be fairly tough...anyway, Im guessing most of you guys can just give the answers the easy way so I can get on with my life...here are some questions.
1. Are there reproduction tailgate emblems? And what does this tailgate emblem look like? (1971) 2. Is there reproduction molding kits for suburbans or do I need to find original stuff? The stuff just under the glass all the way around and the lower fatty moldings. 3. Do pickup truck side marker lights fit suburbans? 4. If I tear out all my factory air unit (starts in the back and runs the entire roof of the burb) am I going to face any issues that I would not expect to encounter? Thanks guys!

Re: Easy questions for a seasoned Burb owner...(GMC)
1. Those rear emblems are not reproduced last I looked.
This picture is from a 1972 GMC. 2. A lot of burb trim is now available, but I think the trim that goes along the wind line is not. MAR-K has been trying to get these hard to come by trim pieces remade again, so you could look them up and see if they can help. 3. PU side markers do interchange to the Suburbans. 4. Not sure about this one. Someone will chime in sooner or later with first hand experience.

Chris is right.... The rear emblem is not reproduced. If you ever see one...make that person an offer to buy it.
Congrats on the burb and welcome to the GMC family... Doug Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device

Thanks guys - I assume the one on the barn doors is the same as a tailgate?

Re: Easy questions for a seasoned Burb owner...(GMC)
Thanks, Chris. Started a new job (few months back), then soccer season kicked in (coaching my daughter's team). Needless to say... A lot of hobbies and personal interests went on pause so I could tend to family obligations. Fortunately my 3 year old son continues to remind me every weekend morning that its time to go for a ride in "burbie". But glad to be back.

The issue on taking out the a/c unit is that you will have a big hole where headliner and a/c were. So you should be on look out for the complete rear headliner.

Is the rear gmc emblem separate letters? I was initially missing my g when i bought it but found it in the glovebox, then at a junkyard i found an extra g and m. Didnt know if these were broke or actually separate letters.

Are there reproduction headliner sets? It's unclear in the part mags and online...I cant tell what they offer for suburban headliners.

I have the same question...from my research i think it's all one emblem, but i would need that to be verified by someone who actually has one or has seen one in person.

Yes, the rear door GMC emblem is 1 piece. The hood letters are separate pieces.

Re: Easy questions for a seasoned Burb owner...(GMC)
No one is reproducing the perforated card board OE style head liner.
There are vendors selling cloth/vinyl with metal bows style, they look like what is in a car of the '70's. I purchased one of these cloth headliner kits, and changed my mind on how it would look. Ended up making a headliner out of white fiber board instead, while it doesn't look OE it's better than the cloth style or nothing at all.

Re: Easy questions for a seasoned Burb owner...(GMC)
There is a company that makes the head liner but it is in 4x8 sheets and you have to cut it to fit. I will try to find the link. They are an antique car restoration place not specific to our trucks. The link I have would be on an old computer that is not hooked up. If you do a search for antique car headliners you might find them that is how I found them. I would have someone weld your GMC letters back together if they are all there complete with the underlining and have them re-chromed. They are super rare. I found a set years ago and have not seen a spare since....

Has anyone checked with SMS?
If they don't have it...it seems they always have their ear to the ground. http://www.smsautofabrics.com/contact.php . Last edited by ETsC10; 11-03-2012 at 02:35 AM. Reason: added link |
