Re: Garage- built in shelves?

What size shelves do you want to make? How much weight do they need to support? There is probably no need to cut out the dry wall. Just make sure everything is supported by your joists.

Re: Garage- built in shelves?

ya..i went out and looked at a hole that already have cut out when i was doing some wiring...there is like no room to have built in shelves. lol

it was like 4 inches deep....i wonder if it would be tacky putting random shelves on the wall..they would probably end up getting closed in like cabinets but without doors.

Re: Garage- built in shelves?

I have seen high school locker doors used in a garage between the studs and it was 16 feet long 6 foot high all shelves. I think he was lucky the frames of the locker doors were 16 inch on center sorry no pics

Do you have any room to come out from the wall?

Re: Garage- built in shelves?

I use'd piece's of 2X6 in between some of the stud's in my shed, they stick out about 2 inch's and give 5.5 inch's of storage. I insulate'd the garage so this would'nt work there.

Re: Garage- built in shelves?

Back in the day when construction/building was going strong a couple of buddies visited the local door manufacture. They were able to dumpster dive where they salvage some solid core doors. Then used a table saw to rip them on 14” centers. Made some incredible shelves that lined the thier shop walls.

Re: Garage- built in shelves?

if you look close at my pics, behind my truck you can see the built ins I built. The walls where a pre-cast concrete structure brought in on a truck and then lifted into place with a crane. It worked great I had my whole 1st floor built in 2 hours. anyways the walls had 24" on center concrete studs, I just built boxes to go in between the studs and then trimmed them out. I plan on putting a sliding barn style door in front of the shelves so I can lock it up tight. You can also see the cavities of the wall system where I have yet to finish the wall
