What carb do I need?

I have a 1972 K10 and the previous owner removed the original Q-Jet and put in an Edelbrock. I want to go back to the Q-Jet, anyone know what model or part number I need? Will any Q-Jet work? The motor is original with a mild cam.

I would go with a late model qjet with an electric choke. All qjets are capable of high cfm. I've used 305 carbs on warmed over sbc without issue.

Re: What carb do I need?

I agree. Mine came off a 1980 Cadillac; pretty much any Quadrajet will work, but the 76-up models have a better casting. I also really like the electric choke.

Oh, one word of caution - when you're looking, make sure it doesn't have an electrical connector on the top. Those are electronically controlled, and you have to have a computer to get them to work. I think they started in 83 or 84.

Re: What carb do I need?

original part number, if you want a matching # carb is as follows:

7042211
704=1970-1975 model years range (if newer than 1975, the part # will start with "1704" vice "704")
2=1972 model year
2 = non-CA emissions (unless it IS a CA emissions truck, in which case this # should be a 5)
1 = Chevrolet (could also be a 2)
2 = Automatic Trans (or, 1 manual)

JD code (4 digit code below and to the right of the part number) should be XXX2 (2 for 1972, 1st 3 are the julian date).

Just want a good Q-Jet that I can unbolt my Edelbrock and bolt on the Q-Jet. Definitely want electric choke.

Are you looking for a used one from a wrecking yard or something new/remanufactured? Summit has some pretty good deals.

Re: What carb do I need?

If your Edelbrock is a 1400-series, then I understand your situation. The carb on my engine was a 1406, with a manual choke and the main jets were rich.... at .100. My engine would gas-foul plugs on a regular basis. I also had an original manifold.

The Edelbrock Performer intake that I bought, plus an Edelbrock Q-Jet (no longer marketed by them) made a big difference. My fuel mixture became leaner and the hotter exhaust gases meant that I had to add a heat shield to my starter solenoid.

That Q-Jet is a 750cfm-rated unit. It has a divorced choke, meaning that there is a thermostat that is inside a housing on the intake, on the right side of the carburetor. A link connects them. I really like my setup. Electric is okay, it's just not what came with mine.

Yes a summit qjet is good. Just type in your application and go from there. My friend bought one and pretty satisfied right out of the box

Re: What carb do I need?

If you call Summit and tell them what you're trying to accomplish, they'll help you pick the right carb.

As far as choke goes, I prefer electric. Easy setup, easy adjustment if needed, and they just work well.

Re: What carb do I need?

Summit has them from 270 bucks and up. Add about 120 more for shipping and the customary broker fees at the border.
Go to Lordco. Price it there. It'll probably be cheaper and if there's a problem with it you can return it.
