quidk question - 71 C20 GVWR
thanks, assuming it's 5200-7500, but is it normally just stated as 7500 for all (i.e. for DMV purposes)? Or, does it ever vary based on truck config (ordered springs, etc)? Also, been a while since owned a 67-72 - where is the GVWR stamped on the vehicle itself? Thanks!

Re: quidk question - 71 C20 GVWR
Just did this three days ago! You must be distracted by a truck in transit.:-)
It says it all right there on the door plate. The left column indicates what your truck was sprung for and had the tires to carry AS BUILT. The right column indicates the max. certified load the truck should carry and could be modified to carry if the left number is lower. You might have to add springs (front and or rear) and heavier tires to meet the load requirements. This informaion is in the owners handbook that I feel every owner should have. Now a big problem is many trucks have had their wheels and tires changed from stock sizes. This leaves it to the owner to verify the tire load rating is high enough and the wheels are as well. Custom wheels & tires might not be up to a loaded camper! This is an issue with the heavier C30 Longhorns, a pair of 2600lbs rated tires won't do on a 7500lbs axle carrying 7000lbs. If there is still a specific question on your truck contact me. Additional information and pictures posts #20 and 21. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...59#post5671359

Re: quidk question - 71 C20 GVWR
ok. yep, all makes sense. thanks Tim - somehow I missed that post or missed at least that part of the thread. however, which number does DMV want when registering? (my 66 only had 1 GVWR number, not 1 as mfgr'ed and 1 as max capacity). That's what my poorly worded question is getting at - reportable GVWR number to DMV. I'm guessing either would fly, but assume they really want the max gvwr cap, not as mfgr'ed. Anyone know which?

For the 73 I got DMV/AAA wanted the "unladen" (Alladin's brother) weight. Fortunately it was on the pink slip and I had to bring the truck to the orifice to show the VIN.

If you suspect that a camper is in your future and you will need to carry the full 7500 then that is what I would use if you have to. Unladen weight is the magic number. When manimal did his longhorn they used the weight on the title, but that was already a CA title being transfered IIRC. Unless there is a compelling fee difference I would use the higher.

Re: quidk question - 71 C20 GVWR
yes - CA is a freak state about the terms "unladen" and/or "empty". The WA title just says "weight" and CA won't accept that as unladen weight. So, I already know I will have to get it weighed, and that's not a problem - luckily a place real close by.
I agree Tim - I will probably just list it as 7500 and cover my bases. |

Do you have one of those lawn storks holding a pickup so the driver knows were it is to be delivered?

Re: quidk question - 71 C20 GVWR
Ha! yes, the stork finally arrived. It was a mean bird and it didn't fly in with jumper cables, but it's all good.
One DMV note - to register this truck in CA cost me a whopping $425. Un-friggin-believeable. That INCLUDED the military how-ya-doin. Thank you very much Sir, may I have another... It is considered a "commercial" vehicle because there is no cap - so they get ya comin and goin out in the wild west out here. Now, before you mud-stripe yerself, that lofty sum did include sales tax, a mere 8% in CA. Luckily, she only weighed in at 4600 lbs. A svelte 3/4 tonner if I ever saw one. Annual tags will be approx $180-200 though. At least I don't have to smog it.... |
