Re: Charging wiring
The wiring instructions previously posted applies when converting an alternator equipped truck from externally regulated type to internally regulated. Our trucks are generator equipped. This thread gives the how and why for a simple conversion for cars (trucks are similar).

Re: Charging wiring
if it is an internal regulated alternator
the big post on back goes to the battery and a smaller wire from that same post goes to the #2 tab number 2 tab is the voltage sensing wire, you can run it from under the dash, i just hook it up to the big post. that is it, i've run many alternators this way. i borrowed toddtheod's picture, the blue wire is for an idiot light, i have no idiots in my cab i eliminated the blue wire in this pic

Re: Charging wiring
thanks that is great info but i am wiring from scratch and using a 2000 escilade 5.7 engine with a 1 wire alternator. that one wire is what i am asking about is i still a 10 ohm resistance to make it turn on and will a autometer volt gauge and a led light for charging have enough?

Re: Charging wiring
a one wire alternator only has one wire coming out from the big post on the back to the battery
no secondary wires or plugs on it

The smaller wire is connected to ignition power through a voltmeter or charge indicator (bulb) originally. You can connect it to a resistor, a diode or a bulb if you prefer. Don't connect it directly to ign power as you could destroy the alternator. Out of curiosity is it like either of these? |
