Junkyard scores and projects

I had to get a new upper grill trim strip, shown here old vs new and as the new one was being installed.

Re: Junkyard scores and projects

I didn't know what I wanted to do with the hood since I've been enjoying the aged look. Bumper needed replaced too. So, first time at the Wrench-n-Go pull your own parts salvage yard. Found 5 or 6 C/K's and 4 or 5 Suburbans to pull from. Here's the haul, bumper with brackets, filler panel, grill (from earlier model with no Chevy symbol or turn signals), bug guard, and a couple interior bits.

Re: Junkyard scores and projects

Old grill pulled, new filler panel installed, test fitted the turn signals, modified, drilled, and mounted.

Yeah, the weird thing was that there's another truck there with the exact same grill on it! Guessing around '80 or so since it was single headlight with the turn signal below the headlight instead of behind the grill like mine. The other one like this had a broken tab on it though if I remember right. I just hope I can get to a Suburban next time before the other vultures get there. I am going Monday to get some of the good gas tank brackets/straps though as those are going for a pretty penny on Ebay these days.

Re: Junkyard scores and projects

You could get both types of headlights in the 80`s depending on trim package. My 86 has single squares, my 84 has up down small squares like yours does.

That's something i never knew. Thanks for the info.

Something i noticed last night is that I popped one of the running light filaments during this whole process so I need to replace the bulb. I should be able to do that tomorrow sometime since I have it off. I'm also going back to the salvage yard to try to pull the dual exhaust that i saw on one of the trucks. Dang thing looked almost brand new. Having 2.5 weeks of vacation to use by the end of the year is nice for truck projects, LOL!

Wrench-n-Go on SE Maury in Des Moines. I got my windshield from Piper Auto Salvage down in SE Iowa a month or two ago, but they don't have any older C/K's there.

Re: Junkyard scores and projects

WOW !!!! Small world man!!!!! I got the same upper grille molding trim piece from the Blue 84 k10 at wrench-in-go a few weeks ago. I was just there on Sunday getting a spare 8 lug steel wheel off of the RED 83 k20 along with the ashtray. I love that place.

Re: Junkyard scores and projects

Yeah that blue 84 is what gave up the bumper and filler panel shown here. The two red ones were the ones with the same/similar badgeless grills. The one I left was better paint-wise but had a broken mounting tab. Also not shown here is the new slider window lock that came off of the brownish two tone one. Talked with one of the guys at the yard that has a creme/brown two tone that he drives every day that he got for free. He just kept laughing at me as I kept running to the truck for more tools when I'd find another part. LOL!

Its probly cause those trucks have been there awhile, and the previous owners bought those grilles back when GM wouldn't give up the rights to reproduce the logo. Now you can find logo grilles for about $60 so maybe their "patent" or whatever it is, finally expired? Who knows. I forgot how all that works lol

Wrench-n-Go type places rotate their inventory much quicker than the traditional yards. They're more about quick turnover and recycling volume than they are about preserving the parts for years to come. You gotta move quick when you find something as it may not be there next time you go!

I don't know about that. My 81 also has the same grille. With the logo of course.

Re: Junkyard scores and projects

81-82 had the turn signals in the bumper. All OEM grills had the emblem (GMC or Bowtie)
83-84 had signals in grill then slight change 85-87 but still in grill (on 4 headlight front end)

My mistake. At first glance the first one looked like the factory one - Didn't notice the vertical bar spacing was different

Re: Junkyard scores and projects

I want an 81-82 front bumper to mount fogs into. I think that looks so cool.

I went back to the Wrench-n-Go to pull the dual exhaust off of one of the trucks and got all but one of the bolts off of the manifold collectors. Dang thing rounded off on me. Going to head back with an extractor socket (or large BFH to hit it with). My luck would be that they crush it before I get back LOL!
