67-72 coil suspension Dana rearend??

Came across a truck that my buddy was telling me he thought had a 10bolt rear. I told him these trucks were 12 bolt rears or Dana's in HD app's. Since this was just a C10, I told him I'd look myself & verify.

It definitely isn't a 12bolt & has a Dana housing. What different levels of the Dana housings were available? What about their strength vs the 12bolt?

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Hi Everyone, If it helps - my 1968 GMC 1/2 ton leaf spring truck has the original Dana44 ten bolt rear, 355 gears......no problem with durability. Works good.

See that's what I assumed it was (a Dana 44). Im curious what possibilities there were. He took a pic of it & someone else 'confirmed' it was a 60. I'm not so sure....

I've seen a few GMC 1/2 tons with Dana 44's in the rear.

Re: 67-72 coil suspension Dana rearend??

mine has one as well but is leaf spring as well. No reasone to believe that they couldn't have been had in a coil rear. Heres a 67 spid with the option code for the dana 44 rear in a half ton. J04 was spicer 44 and J07 was spicer 60.

Re: 67-72 coil suspension Dana rearend??

It could be a Dana 60 6-lug. I don't believe I've ever known of one as late as a '71 that had a Dana 60. They are rare to find,so maybe there were 5-lus and I've just never come across one. I want one, too! Eventually I'm going to get a kit from www.markwilliams.com to convert a 3/4t coil rear.
If it's a Dana 44,that's a cool little detail to be different. But,in reality, they are about dead even with the 12-bolt for strength...no real advantage

Research indicates just looking @ the covers it's hard to distinguish the two since the bolt pattern is similar (which is why I think it's a 44 & not a 60 like my buddies source indicates).

My research shows the 44's to have a 8.5" ring gears; the 60's have 9.5" ring gears so a definite difference/advantage. He purchased a big brake kit for a 12bolt so he can't use the rear. I'm just trying to determine what it actually is. I looked @ the SPID label & didn't see anything special concerning the rearend codes. I tried to take a pic of it but the glare wouldn't allow a quality pic.

I knew the newer Jeeps had the model # cast into the housing web material & learned yesterday that it was common for the older housings as well. I'll suggest to my buddy to clean it up a little & take a look (it was pretty gunked up the other day so I didn't see anything when I looked @ it w/him).

I have one Dana 44 3.54 with Power-Lok that came out of a 68 GMC V6 and one Dana 60 3.54 w/ Power-Lok that came out of a 68 GMC Suburban ambulance with a 396. Both were half ton GMC trucks with 6 lug axles.

Re: 67-72 coil suspension Dana rearend??

Chewy is right. The model should be embossed on the housing. The physical size difference is pretty obvious. A Dana 60 is way bigger than a 12-bolt. A Dana 44 is about the same, but obviously shaped different.

Were both of those leaf spring? I have only seen the Dana rears in GMCs. I have seen GMC coil rear Danas, but that is one rare bird to find (and I want a coil 60 something fierce!). If that Dana 60 is a coil rear I'd like to talk to you about that thing

Re: 67-72 coil suspension Dana rearend??

He said he scrubbed the dirt off & it has 60 stamped in it. I'm going to look @ it again because it didn't look physically larger than a 12bolt which is why I thought it was prob a 44.

For some reason, he no longer wants to swap me for a 12bolt (he thought it was a 10bolt originally until I mentioned it was a dana). Should of kept my mouth shut

Re: 67-72 coil suspension Dana rearend??

Doesn't he know? Danas suck, man. They only used them when they ran out of Corporate rears. Tell him I said so. They rob power. Boat anchors. Oh yeah, and parts are impossible. Honestly, the 6-lug Dana 60 brake parts are probably about impossible (don't mention disc brake conversion).

Re: 67-72 coil suspension Dana rearend??

I have seen a coil spring Dana 60 in a '70 c10 but assumed that it had been swapped from a leaf spring truck...should have looked closer at the truck because it was for sale.

Re: 67-72 coil suspension Dana rearend??

I had a 69 half ton with a Dana 60 rearend. A bearing went out and ruined the axel. I could not find a replacement so I went ahead and switch to a five lug 12 bolt.

Re: 67-72 coil suspension Dana rearend??

There were definitely Dana 60 6-lug rears, but I've never seen a 5-lug. I have only seen the Dana 60 in GMC 1/2 tons. Were these last two trucks Chevy or GMC?

Re: 67-72 coil suspension Dana rearend??

The 67-68 GMC1/2ton 6lug Dana rearend in question is a Dana 60-35 (AKA-Spicer)
this rearend is a Dana 60 with a semi-floating axle shaft where as a standard Dana 60 is a full floating axle shaft . They also used a Dana 44 in the 67-68 GMC 1/2tons. The Dana 44, Dana 60-35 were only used in models with rear leafs.

You'll find the Dana 60 coil rearends under 67-72 Suburbans & 67-70 Panel trucks I've found based on past experience. We have 4 currently but not for sale.
