Pusher fans/puller fans

I have a situation where I do not have enough room to put a 16 inch electric puller fan between the radiator and the water pump pulley. Anyone ever reversed the polarity ( and the blade like some of the nicer units) and put the fan in front to push through the radiator?? I have plenty of room in front. Also the newer units tend to be very open -no so enclosed in a big shroud.Again - any info is welcome. I am ready to get on the road.

I just used the search up at the top and several more threads popped up.

Re: Pusher fans/puller fans

you may want to look into ''sidewinder'' electric fans the motor is off to the side - i have v little clearence between red. and water pump - this particular fan with its side motor did the trick . you can rotate the entire fan so the fan motor will end up where you want it .
hope this helps - good luck

Re: Pusher fans/puller fans

My truck has no room between radiator and water pump for a fan. My fan is an OE electric from an '80s Citation mounted on the X braces in front of the radiator with home made sides forming a shroud. The wiring reversed so it works as a pusher and the fan relay is triggered by a thermo switch from an 82 Cavalier. It works well but keep in mind I'm using a massive radiator from a 56 GMC LCF.

Re: Pusher fans/puller fans

they cool alot better if they pull, because of the shroad but ive seen a bunch of people use them as pushers, an most of them just switched the wires

Re: Pusher fans/puller fans

250/ 2004r - just put in a new champion 3 row aluminum radiator . (only 3 inches clearence) engine is not as tall as the 235 -so the water pump is not as high up ( centered ) in the radiator . A true cheap version of the mechanical flat/aluminum flex fan will just clear - but I have also seen one throw a blade through the hood of my 65 chevy II years ago to - so i am not even considering that.

Re: Pusher fans/puller fans

Chances are you'll have plenty of cooling while you're moving even without a fan. The big issues are going to be when idling at lights or at shows. Watch the fan blade shape very carefully. Some fans are designed as pushers, some fans are effective when converted to pusher, and some just won't get the job done. A shroud is extremely important with a pusher to prevent air from spreading out and going around the rad instead of through it. Some fans have an outer ring that's part of the blade which works similar to a shroud to improve efficiency. This should not be considered a replacement for a shroud unless the fan can be safely placed within 1/4" or so of the rad. A/C condensers mounted underneath transit buses often have very good fan designs and good motors because there's very little natural airflow there.

There's a lot that goes into designing fans. It can be better to use two small fans rather than one large one if the large one's not designed right. Larger fans often have greater speeds at the tips and too much speed moves less air than expected. Ever notice how slowly those giant fans move in movies?? Based on experience trying to use generic aftermarket electric fans to replace the bus condenser fans, cheap stuff may look the same but OE tends to perform better. Search for "bus condenser fan pusher" and you'll probably find something useful.
