A question for the rattle can guys
I just rattled can painted my whole truck in primer gray. I used primer because I intend to get the truck painted in a year or two, and this will make it look presentable while I work on suspension, engine, etc. This is my first major foray into paint of any kind, and especially a full vehicle rattle can. I don't want to spray a top coat of a finish spray paint, as I was told at a paint shop that this would make it much more difficult to paint when I'm ready for the real thing.
The primer scratches pretty easily, seems to rub off pretty easily, and seems to hold dirt and greasy hand marks. Should I try to wax this to keep it from rubbing off and resisting scratches? If I wax it, should I go over it with a very light sandpaper first?Should I just leave it as is? Here are the before and after pics. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Thanks for any ideas.

Re: A question for the rattle can guys
I would'nt wax a primer job, just keep it washed and wiped down on a regular basis, and hit scratches ,nicks and **** with your rattle can whenever you feel like it.Later down the road when your ready for a durable paint job,it's going to be easy to sandblast it down to metal so you can start your body work, fillin holes etc.

Re: A question for the rattle can guys
not being a jerk, and if it sounds that way it is not intended, but:
1. It’s good for a quick looks change (your truck looks good) 2. Will need to come off for paint 3. If you wax it, forget about painting it 4. What is your budget for your upcoming paint job? 5. Spend a little more and get higher quality primer and spray it from a gun. 6. It is not “durable” and will scratch/lift/rub off |

Re: A question for the rattle can guys
Yeah primer from a rattle can will have to be completely stripped off before real paint is applied. You may as well throw a top coat of color on there or a satin black or something.

Yeah the body shop is gonna have to sand that back down anyway unless your going to Mayco. Might as well do what you want with it color wise, but I defiantly wouldn't wax it!

Re: A question for the rattle can guys
Agree with all above posts. I did a similar thing to my truck years ago with the intentions of painting it later. Due to economic circumstances I was unable to paint it and surface rust set in. As I found out, primer I used was porous and let moisture in.

Re: A question for the rattle can guys
Thanks for the input. The paint shop guys told me this rattle can primer was porous and would let moisture in, so not to let it sit more than a year or so. They recommended a spray gun primer, but I don't have anywhere to spray it. Here in Cali, if i spray outside, I'm sure to have problems (I live in a neighborhood). I've considered going to Maaco or some place similar just to have them do a spray gun primer - might still look into that.
