Rear End Gears
I currently have 4.10 rear end gears in my truck. I live in a pretty hilly part of AR. Anyone have any idea what gear size is right? How does 3.08 gears, 3 on the tree w/2.94 first gear and 29.5 inch tires sound?

Re: Rear End Gears
I'm pretty sure you will need a different carrier with 3:08's. With the one you have now there's a limit on the size you can change too. I have 3:73's with a 700 R4 and love the way it works. I'm just going by what I've been told I could be misinformed.

Re: Rear End Gears
4:10's are in the 4th series carrier. I think the 3:08's are 3rd series

Re: Rear End Gears
I have 26" tall tires, 3.08 gear and TH350 tranny. Usually with an 4 speed OD tranny, my gear would be good for the highway. With only a 3 speed, its kinda low for the highway.. I plan a taller rear tire next round to make that gear seem a little taller.
Not sure if that helps.

Re: Rear End Gears
I will assume your running a V8, what RPM are you running at 55MPH with your 3:73 and 700r4? tire size will make a sort of differace also but i didnt see you list that....

Re: Rear End Gears
With a 4 series carrier, 373 is the tallest gear you can go. Do you have 6lug or 5lug?

Re: Rear End Gears
Yes I have a mild 350,28 inch tall tires. I have no idea what my RPM's are as I don't have a Tach. I can tell you I rarely run 55 as I drive a lot on 4 lanes and 65-70 feels a lot like 55 did with the 350 trans I had.

actually, if you're not going to be driving interstate speeds then I'd think the 4.10s would be fine for those hills. 3.08s wouldn't be as good for pulling hills. 3.73 would probably be better, all around. what year truck is it (looks like a '64-'66)? makes a difference if it's a '60-62, I think, as to the ratios available, because it wouldn't be a "12 bolt". you can play around with the gear calculators here: http://www.wallaceracing.com/Calculators.htm

Re: Rear End Gears
My guess is that given the terrain you describe, with a 3.08 you'd be in 2nd gear a lot. Hills and 3-speeds should be much happier with 3.73 than with 3.08.
