Trans-am clip on a 58 step-side

Hi guys im not new to the site but I am new to this section. My dad passed away about a year ago and left me his 58 big window step side that has been sitting and rotting away for years now. The body has the normal rot issues but thats nothing new to me since I live in maryland and have a 67 c-10 and several 2nd gen f-body's. My question is weather or not it is worth the effort to use my 81 trans-am front clip with all new susspension(tubular control arms and coilovers) under my 58. I have heard a lot of stories about failed attemps and how the rebuild cost of a used clip is high. I am looking for som advice and maybe a good step by step how to. So I run into as few problems as possible.

Thanks
Karl

Re: Trans-am clip on a 58 step-side

i don't know where the "high cost" came from But it comes up from time to time.
Sence you have the sub frames you are half way there. The trans ams have the 1.25 swaybar and that is a plus for handeling.
I did one on my 52 Shortly after i had brain surgery and it was't' that hard. measure and measure again.

Re: Trans-am clip on a 58 step-side

Here is a link to a thread on doing just written by a guy who has done a number of them. he pretty simplifies it.

Word to the wise, the HAMB is a traditional hot rod and custom board and they don't like billet anything nor do they like rat rods on that board. Just an advisement in case you decide to join it.

I like it.

I got myself banned from the HAMB for continuing to post pictures of my truck in a "Cool trucks thread" after someone complained. I enjoyed myself getting them all stirred up.

For the life of me I don't know how anyone could look at your truck and not like what they see. Even if its not their style it seems to me they would have to admit its very tastefully done and its a great example of how that style of truck should look.

Personally I like any style that is well planned out and done well, so the HAMB is not a place for me(not saying their cars are not done well, just saying I like more than one thing). I'm just a carnut what do I know.

I could not agree more that is why I enjoyed getting them all worked up . I like anything with wheels and a motor. As long as it is well thought out and has the right stance the make/model/color/condition makes no difference to me. I like em all....

Oh thanks for the compliments on my truck.

Marc

Re: Trans-am clip on a 58 step-side

The Hamb definitely isn't for anyone and doesn't try to be. The rules are clearly laid out and if a guy can't abide by them then he may not fit in. It's a traditional hotrod and custom board and non traditional vehicles don't fit in. I posted the note simply because I didn't want 67lngbed to set himself up for catching the same flack that youngrodder did when he continuously posted photos of his truck that while a world class truck is no way a traditional build and doesn't belong on that board. That's akin to a guy who has an F100 putting up photos of his F100 here even though it doesn't fit in on a Chevy truck board.

I posted the link for Karl to look at because it is one of the definitive threads on the subject on the internet and is well written and easy to understand.

Re: Trans-am clip on a 58 step-side

mr48chev,

I know why you posted the link and its good you did. You were trying to help the original poster. They do have a lot of good information on the that site. It seems when H.A.M.B is mentioned opinions about the site start to roll.lol

I did not direct my comment towards you at all or people who are members H.A.M.B I joined and immediately saw that it was not the site for me. Although I have seen pics of my truck used on that site to explain certain mods I've done, I know full well those same guys would not like my entire truck. But thats how I look at rides also I see what I like and don't like so its cool with me. So I agree with you on that.

Re: Trans-am clip on a 58 step-side

Well put Kabwe, some people don't seem to understand that concept. I may have been guilty of snagging one of your photos at times to explain something to someone with the best example I can find of a certain component or modification.

It would be a real boring forum and boring world if we all built our trucks exactly alike. We would probably be regulated to being restorers and holding long discussions on the proper chalk marks on firewalls and inviting some old gent to come out of the nursing home because he was the inspector in one of the truck plants that put that certain chalk mark on the firewalls of our trucks. If you have ever attended a Mustang regional meet you will understand that one.

Re: Trans-am clip on a 58 step-side

I've learned a lot over at HAMB, if you understand the culture you will do ok, if not then don't fight it. They liked my Chevelle, I never even posted the 59 truck.
