Engine numbers help please!

I tried to research them but I wasn't having much luck.
This engine is in my 69 C10 , its supposed to be the original 350 that was in the truck. These are the numbers located at the front passenger side of the engine, but you experts all ready know that. I read there is some numbers on the back of the head on the driver's side. I need to clean that area up, someone spilled gasket adhesive all down that area. I can see a ???114 maybe, its tough to tell.

Re: Engine numbers help please!

This is what "CDB" translates to:

CDB 1972 350 Powerglide, Calif L65 - 2 A B/Monte
CDB 1982 267 Roch E2ME carb. J L39 - 2 B G

Check the casting number on the back of the block on the drivers side in front of the bellhousing. Hope for it to be... 3970010. Then it would be a 350.

You say it might be XXXX114? Sure the last 3 might be 014? That would be a 350 as well.

You really don't want it to be the cruddy 267.

Re: Engine numbers help please!

Wow, this is confusing, takes a bit to figure out .
So far the easy part, the engine code V0315CDB
Means
V = made in Flint
03 = March, the 3rd month
15 = 15th of the month
However CDB means ??

The engine vin 12C173624, does not match at all to my truck vin, so numbers aren't matching!!! Which they should for a 1969 correct?
So where did this engine come from?!?!?!

I will try to get my casting numbers. Thank goodness for camera phones, makes it a whole lot easier to simply squeeze your hand to the location 10 or 20 times until you get the best / clearest picture...lol

Re: Engine numbers help please!

Thanks Gasoline, I forgot to respond to your post in my previous post, sorry about that.

Do you think the CDB means maybe its a 72 and came with the 350 powerglide trans?

I will go get the casting number, I'm sure that will help, I hope.

Re: Engine numbers help please!

That's what the number you posted says. But now you need to look at the casting number on the back of the block located on the drivers side rear... just in front of the transmission bellhousing.

Re: Engine numbers help please!

On A matching numbers motor the last six digits on the pad match the last six on your vin.
In your case the numbers 173624 are the ones that should match.

Hi Joe, Welcome to the fourm!
Our trucks did not have frame numbers stamped on the block. Cars of the era (67-72) did but trucks did not. Your motor came out of a passenger car, and from the CDB code it came from a 72 or 82 impala or chevelle. If it's a 72 then it's a 350. if it's a 82 then it's a 267. I bettin on the 72. Grab that casting number. I use the camera trick alot cause I'm too old to crawl across the motor

Re: Engine numbers help please!

Thanks Bruce,
I think you just missed it.
Its 3970010
Which could be a 1968 327
or
I think and hope its a
1969-79 350, How do I tell if its 2 bolt or 4 without taking it apart?

Re: Engine numbers help please!

Good shot, it's a 72 350. the 010, 350 block is the most desireable, due to a high nickel content. You can't tell 2 or 4 bolt without dropin the pan and lookin.

Re: Engine numbers help please!

I love the clock markings, but can't they have the minute as well

It looks like the 10th hour of the shift (hope they weren't to tired)
How about the other marking the shift maybe, it shows a D N T, I'm thinking Day shift, Night shift, whats the T if they are doing 10 hour shifts?

Also there is a 3 down below the clock area, 3rd mold maybe?

Re: Engine numbers help please!

You have a 350. Not much more to it than that. You have a very good foundation for an engine in that truck.

Re: Engine numbers help please!

The 010 in the casting number does not signify the nickel content. If there is a 010 or a 020 or both under the timing chain cover that is supposedly the better block.

Re: Engine numbers help please!

Yeah the 3970010 is probably the most common number for a 350. They put that number in everything. I have pulled that number out of wagons, moving vans, campers, trucks, vans and cars. The 4 bolts were put in the heavier of vehicles. If you could find a cube van with a 2 barrel, most likely it was a 4 bolt.
