Help me identify this wire
I don't know a lot about engines but I am trying to learn as I go along. I decided to start by replacing the intake manifold and some other things on the engine. I came across this wire I know where it goes, but not sure the name of it. The cover around the wire is falling apart and I would like to either get a new sleeve to go around it or replace it all together.
So First can someone please tell me a name for this wire so I can find a replacement? Second is it worth just re-sleeving or replacing the whole thing? Lastly in the second picture I have these extra ports on the manifold. I found on the forums everyone is just plugging them, but no one said what they are using to plug them with. Any info on where to find plugs and maybe what size I need would be helpful. Thanks |

Re: Help me identify this wire
Temp gage (light) lead. Green, right?
If it's laying where it was before you changed the intake manifold, it probably plugged into a sensor up at the front of the manifold. I think most of them (like mine) run along the the top of the driver's side frame rail inside the engine compartment and connects to the sensor that bolts into the head...or is it the block?.... in the area of the front driver's side exhaust ports.

Re: Help me identify this wire
Yes, it runs from down on the right side of the engine and goes into the firewall. The color of the wire is green.

Re: Help me identify this wire
Looks like the temp wire. Should mate to the sensor coming out of the head right side facing the truck.

Re: Help me identify this wire
Any parts store(Autozone, advance, napa, o'reillys) should have the plugs for the intake. See the plug in the top of the waterpump? They are just like that one. They are pipe thread plugs usually brass but can be steel. Put thread sealant on them before installing and don't overtighten. A little past snug is good.

Re: Help me identify this wire
Thanks guys. It is running from the drivers side front of the engine. Ill see if I can find a replacement for it. The PO just wrapped most of the wires in the engine compartment in a bad electrical tape job so Ill be unwrapping and finding a better solution for insulating the wires.

www.delcity.net/store/Fabric-Loom/p_279 Attached is a picture of mine which also shows the clip GM attached to the driver's side upper water pump stud to retain the wire so it passes safely down the front of the engine. The wire then runs below the front 2 spark plugs and up to the temperature sensor. |

Re: Help me identify this wire
On your wire loom, oreilly's auto parts store carries that and sells it by the foot.

Re: Help me identify this wire
Thanks guys. I dont have an Oreilly's around here but Ill check what I do have available for one. As for the clip on the water pump I dont have one of those, but the stock valve covers do have clips to hold it down on top of the block and run it behind the engine.

Re: Help me identify this wire
When I picked up the wire the wire loom just crumbled at the touch. So I need to find something to recover it with.

Re: Help me identify this wire
What is this, a test?
Okay...red is always ground.....Okay, okay, just kidding. Some light would be nice. Are we looking at a valve cover and a part of the exhaust manifold? The last picture of your truck had black valve covers.... From the gage of the wire, I'm gonna guess it's the 12-fattie power to either the regulator or.... .....Hey! Forget it. How about a better pic and a location? Unless someone that's hipper than me gets it first.

Re: Help me identify this wire
Okay....I'm still playing!
I guess you painted/changed the valve covers. The new pictures help. Ahhhh...Those shots, and that other dark shot was an *earlier one* before you changed out the intake manifold? But.... I'm still guessing. In 40 or so years anything can happen under the hood. From where it sits (although not the "correct" spot...and probably not a "good" location), I'd say that's the 12 gage red wire to the alternator. Although, in the first picture you posted, you can see a red wire connected to the alt that looks like it is coming from the correct direction. From the firewall pics, it looks like your truck is not a '72, but I use this little book all the time for all the 67-72 electrical stuff, along with diagrams that the great folks on the Forum have provided....

Re: Help me identify this wire
NAPA stores also carry the wire loom.

Re: Help me identify this wire
To me the red wire and that connector look like the one that came packaged with my carb to power the electric choke.
