Economical GPS Speedo - got omine for 40 bucks
My 700R4 install nullified the stock speedo and the box to fix it is more than 500 bucks so I bought a Road Angel on ebay. They sit on the dash and give you your speed plus have radar/laser detectors. They are from the UK. If you pay for the subscription (I didn't) they all talk to each other to warn you about police speed traps, bad roads, and other things but I just wanted a temporary, cheap speedometer fix. I hard wired it and it works great. (Also has a compass.)
Just a thought for those without a working speedo on a daily driver. |

It does both Kph or Mph. Digital readout with adjustments you can make, many.

This is what it looks like below. They come up now and again on Ebay. They also have their own website where they sell them for much more but if you watch for one it shouldn't take long on ebay.

Nice product for a temp fix.
The best solution is a Speedhut GPS. www.speedhut.com Very nice guages and they are life time warrinty.

Yes, that is the best solution but i am pretty happy with this until I can afford that. I hard wired it in, used a piece of double-stick tape and it is very visible to me.

Great idea , but if you put in a 7004r , can you not just get the pieces fron an early 700 to convert it to cable?. I have done this many times on 81-87 p/u's , putting in 88-91 700r4's , not that bad of a job at all. Just my 2 cents , I'll probably get change back.... - Bob

On the back of your transmission. there is a place for you to plug into the speed sensor. basically what you do is remove the electronic one and replace with a mechanical one. like from a 87 down. There is if I remember correctly one bolt holding a retainer ring. once that is loose lightly tap on it until it comes out. Just be careful doing so, these are easily broken.

it is good to have the GPS so you can tell how far off the speedo is, or not.

You also have to change the gear on the output shaft. Pull the tailstock off , you will see the electric wheel. pull that , install the plastic gear from the early 700 , I've usually pirated the whole tailstock from the early one. Hope this helps - Bob
