1/2 ton or 3/4 ton????
Is a 1963 Chevy C10 with an 8 ft. box considered a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton and does it matter when changing over to disc brakes with drop spindles? It's also 6 lug.

Re: 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton????
lolife's right bearcamp - but just so you know, long beds could have been had on 1/2 or 3/4 tonners - the giveaway that yours is 1/2 ton is that it has 6 lug wheels. Regarding disk brake swaps - it does matter - if you buy a kit, you can convert to 5 lug in the process and then maybe have a few more wheel options. The downside is that then you'd be 5 lug in front, 6 lug in back and need 2 spares to be prepared for a flat! There are several 6-lug conversions available out there and you can always add 6-lug disk rears later if you want - but this way you have the best of both worlds - 6 lug all around and disks up front (unless you eventually convert to 4 wheel disks). Another consideration is whether you want to run the conversion disks on stock or 71-87 components - the latter a little more cost effective down the road and more plentiful - but the point is that there are kits that allow you to do 6 lug disks on stock 63 spindles with stock 63 ball joints. it's a small upgrade in the packages to include 71-87 components. Personally, I'd opt for that inexpensive upgrade.
A few more notes - stock 6 lug steel wheels through 1970 will not fit over a disk caliper, so if you want stock steelies, you will need to locate some 71-87 K5/K10 wheels (even when 1/2 ton C10s went to 5 lug wheels, the K10s (4X4) remained 6 lug - so they are a much desired junkyard find, but they are still around). If you can get your hands on 5 of them, you're golden for a current front disk upgrade and any future rear disk upgrades and a spare. If you're going with aftermarket 6 lug wheels, then never mind this whole steelie discussion. 8-lug wheels indicate a 3/4 tonner or higher - as does a "20" on the fender. Hope that helps. |

Re: 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton????
Well since I piggybacked on bears last thread I have a,question: on changeing over a 3/4 are there yard swaps? A Arms & parts or crossmember? Van or pickup or what do you have?
