first start up? on junkyard engine
Im about to start my 5.3 for the first time in god knows how long. I have a mechanic friend that tells me to squirt a few squirts of oil into each cylinder before I fire it off. What are all of you LS swappers doing for first time starts with in your engines that have been sitting for a long time between running? And what kind of antifreeze are you running? The red stuff that they come with now days, or the conventional green stuff?

Re: first start up? on junkyard engine
I usually pull the plugs and the injector fuses and crank it over for about 10 seconds at a time until you get oil pressure. A little oil down the cylinders wouldn't be a bad idea, it will help the rings since the cylinder walls are probably dry. As for antifreeze, flush out any remaining Dexcool with water and refill with green. Dexcool is horrible!

Re: first start up? on junkyard engine
I squirted some marvel mystery oil in my plug holes, set overnight, left plugs out and pulled fuses like LS1Nova71 did for injectors and coils. It doesn't take long for oil pressure to come up. I put a temp guage on just to be sure I had good pressure too. Then put everything back in and stand back for majic. Why is Dexcool horrible? I've been using it no problems so far.

I threw a little wd40 in each cylinder when it was sitting on the stand, a few months later, it was in the truck and fired first crank.

Re: first start up? on junkyard engine
I'm with these guys. I normally pull the fuel pump fuse, and disconnect the coils at the valvecover junctions and crank it for a bit to get some oil moving, then fire it up.

Thanks, I figured priming it would be best, just not used to not having a distributer to do it with. Funny about the Mervell Mistery oil, I've heard that option as well, some guys swear by that stuff!!

Re: first start up? on junkyard engine
One thing to think about if it does not start immediatly is your injectors. Mine were stock ones that sat for quite a while they were gummed up and did not squirt fuel. I pulled my fuel rail and with a helper I unhooked the coil wiring and did one injector at a time. I hooked up the one to work with and started cranking over while tapping on the injector till it shot fuel onto my rag. I went to the next and so on. Then it worked great.
