Flip kit axle location

[IMG][/IMG]So when you install a flip kit (85C10) it moves the axle housing forward ? How much? I'm doing my own flip (the right way) and can't remember how much it moves to center the rear wheel in wheelwell I assume.
Anyone know?

Thanks

Re: Flip kit axle location

it needs to go back so you dont bottom out the yoke on your trans/driveshaft. 1/2-1" should be good

Re: Flip kit axle location

So when you move the housing on top of the springs it actually moves forward an inch? And the offset on a "flip kit" moves the housing toward the rear so the driveshaft doesn't bottom out.
My last truck i installed the housing centered on the spring pins but had to have a driveshaft made cuz it was a 9 inch ford but it awalys looked like the rear wheels were not centered in the wheelwell ( they were too far back) but you are saying they move to front.

Interesting.

Re: Flip kit axle location

it needs to move back because the the drive shaft will be flatter. im too tired think straight. kinda like how lifted truck can need a longer shaft

Re: Flip kit axle location

Ok makes perfect sence now I wasn't thinking about the driveshaft arc. So will moving it back (the rearend housing) an inch make it still centered in the wheel opening?

Just to be clear, when you weld those perches to your axle tubes, put the offset hole forward so when the rear end is mounted the axle will move toward the back.

Got ya. I may just mount them centered and shorten the driveshaft if the wheel isn't centered in wheelwell.

Re: Flip kit axle location

Subscribed as well. Seems a better way to lower the rear I think. Best to make own perches or any paticular set or brand better than others?

Re: Flip kit axle location

Yes man, the flip kits move your axle backwards, so it looks stupid because it's not centered in the wheel opening. i hated the way mine looked, which made me swap trannies sooner rather than later since I was going to need a new driveshaft anyway...I redrilled my flip brackets to move the axle in the center of the wheel opening, it looks, much, much better like that.

Re: Flip kit axle location

Mine centered just fine. But it's a fleetside

I got the axle perches from summit and they came in a mopar box. About $20 I think. Very thick ones and full formed like the factory ones

Re: Flip kit axle location

What all exactly do you have to buy parts wise to do a drop in the rear using this method of lowering? How much about does it cost? Need new shocks in the rear afterwards?

All you need is leaf spring pads and you need to do something with the shocks. You can use shock extenders in the stock location or in my case I am doing a weld in step notch and relocating the spring hangers so I will move the shocks and make new mounts. .

Re: Flip kit axle location

Not sure what my wheelbase measures. The front A arms is an inch forward and so is the rear. Still handles like a fat corvette

Stock wheelbase is 117.5 inches, interested to know what it is on your trucks with a flip kit installed.

You need the spring pads/perches ($12.99 pair) and lower spring plates/shock mounts ($28.99 each) both from speedway motors.
If you don't change anything else (stock springs and hangers) then you can use stock shocks.
I modified the springs and had to use shorter shocks.

Did you need to shorten driveline?

Re: Flip kit axle location

So got this finished up kinda. Heres some pics,
Spring pad and lower plate. Factory U-Bolts

Shorter shock, upper mount was cut off rear end housing and reused.
I know the welds look awful! lol

Relocated brake hose

Posted via Mobile Device
Driveline was too long as expected (i mounted the rear end housing centered on the pins) i just happened to have a shaft laying around that fit perfectly! I think it was out of a mid 80s G body
The end result is a centered wheel and roughly same cost as a flip "kit" only much stronger.
