Repaint or Bedline?
I want do redo my bed cause it is in pretty rough shape. I know a lot of guys on here dont like bedlining because they think it devalues the truck. So I'm trying to decide if I should bedline or repaint. If I do paint it, how should I go about that?
thanks |

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
Depends. Is your truck bed damaged, dinged, rusted?
If it just needs painting, I bought a quart of Rustoleum black paint and rolled it on. It hardens after it dries and sits in the sun. I don't do a lot of hauling but it has held up well in the last couple of years. If it gets faded or dinged, I just give it another coat. There are other paints that are as good or better. Problem with the spray or roll on lining stuff is that if it cracks moisture gets under it and it's not noticeable until rust sets in. I've seen it. Also if you ever want to get rid of it, it's almost impossible to remove. Paint you can just sand blast it or repaint it.

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
To me the question is more of do you use your truck as a truck or just drive it and show it off.? If you use it and haul stuff not getting it lined is silly to me and to spend money and time painting it only to have it all chipped and scratch up is pointless.

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
We just did this a little over a week ago. There is a lot of information in the thread. Utimately it boils down to a work truck, pretty truck or a collector's truck. If its beat a spray in liner will give a working bed a lot more life. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=550439

69GWC : As for silly to have to paint it.... I haven't had to do that in two years. As I mentioned, it depends on what you use your truck for. I just do light hauling a few times a year. Also forgot to mention to3/4ton72heavychevy .... Lots of pros and cons on this so be prepared to hear it from both sides.

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
Yeah thats why I said it depends on if your going to use it for hauling loads ( for a truck) or use it for cruising and showing it off. I stand by my "silly" statement because if your going to haul stuff all the time a bedliner would be the way to go (unless money is a issues) and if your hauling stuff alot one would guess its not a show truck or restored truck so your not devaluing a show truck.
Just like you said if you dont haul alot or very often painting the inside of the bed is a great way to go and looks great to boot. And i said silly not to line it if you haul alot not silly to paint it. Anyway just my 2 cents dont mean to offend anyone. Posted via Mobile Device Last edited by 69GWC; 11-14-2012 at 09:05 PM. |

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
Ok, here's another option, buy a rubber bed mat. It will cover up your beat up bed, easy to remove an clean. You can paint or coat your bed when you save up the bucks later. I purchased one recently for my 72 step for about $70 delivered.

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
Paint it if at all possible .. the cheap'O bed liner is crap after a few years. There are some that's better than others (not trying to start a war) .. but prepping the bed for bed liner, vs. prepping the bed for paint (?) I'd say just go ahead and paint it.
If the truck was new, and prepped right, .. then good quality liner applied it might be different. An old truck, rusty and dirty in the bed .. then just rolled on? I'd say no.

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
I ordered one from Summit Racing for my K20. I have spray in liners in my other trucks. Part number is LRV-6642D. $86.64 delivered to my door.
I decided to use the bed mat because my K20 has a wood bed and I don't want to spray liner over it. I may still do the sides, rails and tailgate with a spray on though.

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
Google DeeZee, find the right part number then search away. It's a nice quality mat and fit's great.

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
When I am ready to paint my truck I am going to have a place sand blast the bed floor so I can paint it the same color as truck. When I need to haul stuff I will just put a rubber mat or something to protect paint. Gonna be my daily driver and used for multiple stuff but will baby my truck too.

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
Check out my thread http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=553105
I plan to buy some white semi gloss Rustoleum from Lowes or Home Depot, and have them mix in blue to match as closely as possible. If anybody knows of a better way, please chime in Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
Back in the late 80's a friend of mine give me his drop in liner out of his 85 Dodge swb that dropped rite in on mine. Try to fine a Dodge liner in either lwb or swb. It will drop rite in. Saves a bunch of money.
I'll get pics later today of mine. I still use it when I do some hauling. |

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
bedliner will last your life time and be real good oif you plan to use the truck. But if it's a show car then paint and put up the sign "unless your naked don't touch"

Re: Repaint or Bedline?
Nothing looks worse then a truck of color with a rolled on black bedliner. I to was down this road and was concerned my rust free bed would appear to be a cover up. I had the shop prep it and had a bedliner sprayed on nice, not heavy and clumpy.. I also payed to have them match the color of the truck so it looks mint!!..
BUT!! if your gonna use the hell out of the bed, sand, gravel, ect ect... then roll away!!
