Lost Parts...Boy, Am I Stupid

I'm the happy owner of a new tilt by Forum Guru KevsClassics....Pristine workmanship. But, during the install,
I did something very stupid. Then, after I did that, I did another stupid thing.

The first one is that I left out the spring and washer that sets the preload where the lower shaft and column meet!

Second, is that I had to move everything from the shop to home and I lost these parts.

Anyone know where I can find #19 and #20? Or, does anyone know what kind of off-the-shelf hardware,
if any, I can use to replace them?

My tilt column does not have the spring and washer on the bottom like the non-tilt columns. It has a bearing retainer. Your pic looks like non-tilt column to me.

Okay. Cool. Here's what I have now.

The one pic shows where there is a "tolerance" that will move (as pictured, UNDER 1/16").

It does not move "fore and aft", only up and down or side to side when you wiggle it with your hand. It makes a little "clunk".

That's where I thought the preload spring went to keep that from happening. But, it seems like since the "movement" is on a more-or-less
"horizontal axis", the preload of fore and aft would be less likely to be necessary.

What do I do to keep this from moving at all? Except, when I turn the steering wheel!

Re: Lost Parts...Boy, Am I Stupid

Maybe the best question would be.......

Is there a difference between:

A tilt column lower shaft, (from the intermediate coupler to the rag joint)

- from -

A non-tilt column lower shaft (from the intermediate coupler to the rag joint)?

Re: Lost Parts...Boy, Am I Stupid

My understanding is the intermediate shaft is the same.

When I assembled my tilt to the shaft I used the spring and thick washer, it does not take up all the room so no tension on the bearing in question.

Do you have the movement at the top or bottom of the column? The brg adjustment nut at the top should remove the vertical movement.

The movement almost looks like it's between the bearing and bearing race when I grab the lower shaft and move it up and down (as opposed to in and out). See pic below with 1/16" "play". It all looks good except for this slight movement.

I don't know what the "bearing adjustment nut" is. Maybe an adjustment in the adapter behind the retainer?

The movement seemed to lessen a little when I tightened the lower shaft's intermediate coupler bolt. But I don't want to tighten down on that too much thinking it's a "fix"...

.....Unless it is! Hahahaha!

Re: Lost Parts...Boy, Am I Stupid

Well I don't know about movement in the lower column. I have never tried to find any on mine. It could be normal. It doesn't sound like you have any play at the steering wheel. Here's a pic of the upper brg adj nut I found in another thread. if it was off you would have up and down and side play in the wheel.
