SPID experts needed

My father bought this truck new and I know that it has locker rear end. I can remember several times when we didn’t get stuck him going off on how cool it was to have a locker rear and how he didn’t need 4 wheel drive! Plus I drove it for many years as well. I just brought the Longhorn home after being in storage for over 12 years and I expected to see it listed on the SPID. Could it be included under one of the other options?

Re: SPID experts needed

Maybe it doesn't have a locker? Have you jacked up the rear end and spun the tires to see for sure, or popped the diff cover off?

Re: SPID experts needed

I will take the cover off to confirm. I guess I was wondering if the camper package or the heavy spring options would include the locker? I doubt that those option included it but I was surprized to not see it listed for how many times I saw it spin both wheels and my father mentioning it?

Re: SPID experts needed

Nothing here indicates it was factory installed. If it is a posi/locker then it was probably swapped in. Dealer might have done that. Have you tried looking for a build sheet? Like leddzepp says pull the cover and take a look.

Tim, is the special camper option just the nameplate?

Bud, we need more pics of this truck and still waiting on pics of the 67 you dragged home!

Re: SPID experts needed

Hi Jud,

I did post up pics of the 67 C10 I picked up on the way to bring the Longhorn home in my NADA post.

The Longhorn has the camper wiring running into the box so I guess more than the nameplate? My friend who took all the pictures of us hauling family vehicles home hasn't sent them to me yet! I will post up some action pics when I get them.

If anything the dealer install makes the most sense. I just figured out that the seat is missing when someone mentioned to look for the build sheet! The truck was taken apart and stored in pieces about 12 years ago! The saddle tanks are missing as well so the gas tank doors in the box sides are useless.

Re: SPID experts needed

My '70 Longhorn has all of the camper options (it's a Custom Camper) and did not have posi from factory.

The Z81 Custom Camper was a name plate option only. To qualify for the option there were specific equipment requirements. Many trucks have all the options and more but were not ordered with the "no charge" name plate.

Re: SPID experts needed

I’m 99.99% sure it has a locker so the only way to know for certain is to remove the cover! If so then it would have to have been dealer installed. Anyone know why the tire size is listed twice is that typical?

It could have been dealer installed, it might have been left off the SPID. The dealer could have even swapped rear ends. Might have been done after delivery by a shop. If it was added the stickers were most often not installed but put loose in the glovebox along with the paperwork.

The ways to check are pick up both rear tires and try to turn in opposite directions. Pull the cover and inspect everything, plus change the lube. Clean up and see if you can find an axle code. The code would tell us if it was a factory install in that housing.

The tires are listed showing optional tires on the front and the rear. Looks like an optional spare was not ordered however. The fronts, rears and spare tire or wheel are listed as individual RPOs as they are.

Re: SPID experts needed

Tim,
Thanks for the information. I will look for the code since the rear end is clean. Is the code a metal tag or stamped on the rear end? I was 14 when he bought it so I remember it pretty well. I got to wash and maintain it quite often! I know for a fact it came from the dealer with a spare tire and the spare tire hanger is still under it.

The spare tire and RPO P10 spare tire carrier were standard equipment. An 8.75-16.5C in this case. What I stated is that an optional (type/size) spare does not appear on the SPID and it should as the spare is required to match the front or rear tires. Not an uncommon annomoly though. On a 4x2 the fronts and the rears could be different sizes and tread types from the factory. On a 4x4 they all matched. If tire option(s) were selected a matching spare was to be ordered. It only had to match one pair. On the C30s a spare wheel only could be specified instead.

The camper wiring is an option of it's own. Not part of the Z81 option, just like the camper mirrors.

You only need to jack up one rear wheel to check for a locker. The wheel won't spin because the one on the ground can't. Your dad may have had the dealer,or someone else, install a Detroit Locker. But,if it was factory it would be listed on the SPID.
