Disk brake conversion

Hello eveyone! I'm new to the site and to messing with these trucks. Can anyone tell me what year model c10 trucks I can get the front brake parts off of and convert 6 lug to 5 and get disk brakes? I have heard 73-87 will work? Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share this info. I am working on a swb 67

71 n 72 trucks will work. And the later year group too (73 - 87 ?). Classic Parts has a kit with spindles, bearings, rotors, brake pads, brake lines, calipers all the front end stuff you would need. Or some find it easier to swap out the entire front cradle assy as one unit. You will also need a portioning valve from a front disk brake truck too. All that would be included with a conversion kit from Classic or Brothers.

Not tp highjack this thread but I have a question about porportioning valve. I understand the concept of using a "disc" brake valve but am wondering why you can't or shouldn't use the drum valve? Truthfully I converted my 70 3/4 ton to disc and kept the drum valve and master cyl. Also did the same on my sons 69 1/2 ton, brakes seem to work great. Is the percentage front to rear the differece? Also chucked the valve on my 70 K-10 years ago while it still had drums and left it off after the 3/4 ton axles went in, still brakes worked great, however it may have locked easier in the rear. Just figured Cmalone may have similiar questions.

the way i understand it a disk brake porportioning valve allows more of the pressure to go to the front brakes as engineers designed it orginally.

Drum trucks have a distribution valve and do not proportion the fluid as a disc valve does.

I have been planning my 4 wheel disc conversion for a while now, and from my research you may just want to go with a custom front spindle and rotor kit. I ended up purchasing a McGaughys kit #63148. The kit comes with 2.5 inch drop spindles, dual piston calipers, and 13" cross drilled rotors, 5x5 bolt pattern, hoses and bolts. You can gather all the parts for the standard 72 setup for a little less money but the McGaughys kit looks great and will perform a lot better. Just something to think about.
