What whitewall tires are you using?

Time for new tires for my 58 restoration and the stock tire size seems too skinny for me. What's a good stock looking tire that's a little wider and still looks cool. Pics if you got em
Thanks

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?

get the tire you want on there, and get out the white wall paint. make your own white walls.
these are about 4 years old now. still look great. tires were about 55 dollars each, and some white latex paint from home depot was about 10 bucks a gallon...

enjoy!

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?

I'm using porta-walls for now but I'll get some real whitewalls when I need new tires. My wheels are fifteen inch old style Corvette, eight inches wide. Tires are 235/75/R15.

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?

Far from finishing our build, but we got the rims and tires to get the stance right. These are 15x6 artillery wheels from the Wheelsmith. I was afraid that the tires would look too skinny also but they look good!

I'll have to check later to get the exact size and I'll shoot a mock photo of them on my 58 Apache. I do know they are 2 3/4" WW

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?

Look at www.Hurstracingtires.com I have had a few sets from them and using a "new" technology tire while bonding a 3" wide white to the outside has worked well. I will be replacing my Cokers with Hurst when the time comes for the Suburban.

Mine are Diamondback Tires on 15x6 wheelsmith smoothies. I'll apologize up front for not recalling the exact size and model (age related memory disorder).

Edit: I believe they are Diamondback II (It's all coming back to me now).

I have 205/75/15's on my D@D&E.
My 59 chevy truck has 255/60/15's on the front and 275's on the rear.
Just realize that a wide tire on stock suspension will cause the negative tendancies of the I beam design to be more pronounced. When funds allow those wide tires are coming off my truck and I will put on a size similar to what is on my dodge.

225/75/R15's... I don't think they're too skinny on the '57.

Russ, She looks SO good in that shot. Is she still at stick height with straight axle? I ask cause even though she MIGHT be sitting down a bit in back with that load, the distance from wheel well to tire in front looks like mine - stock.

Also, what caps are on those rims?

Dan, It's all stock but the springs seem to have weakened some, possibly due to age. There's only about two inches between the bump stop and spring on the front. It was originally a six but now has a 350 which may be contributing to the lower front end. I like the way it sits now but I think it would look better if the front was a couple of inches lower.

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?

I agree they look better a little lower than stock. Personally; and this is just me, not a statement about how other guys do theirs - but I'd like the tire to look like it JUST misses the wheel well when looking at it from the side. BUT, I don't want to deal with rubbing tires, having to approach dirveways a certain way, etc.

Even though IFS tempts me constantly, I like the idea of keeping it stock with disc brakes and power steering, though I know that costs as much as many IFS methods.

Coker 235 75 15 radials. Wow they were pricey. I hope they last the life of the truck ....

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?

Goodyears 235/75/15s on 15*8 rims at the rear
Goodyears 205/60/15s on 15*6 rims at the front

I only got the Goodyears because there were no BFG Silvertowns available at the time & I needed to get them to Long Beach to catch a container ride to New Zealand.

I would not recommend the Goodyears. They perform okay, but they have a pattern in the whitewall that traps dust really easily, so the look dirty shortly after they get cleaned.

The supplier did offer a cheaper brand, but when I looked it up, it was a pretty low performance tyre. He did tell me that quite a few people are disappointed with their Goodyears due to the dust trap issues. Next time, I will plan better and get the Coker/BFG Silvertowns

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?

I could use some advice on this topic...

I'm going to run 18" steel spares on my truck, and I've been looking for some whitewalls to fit an 18" wheel.

Diamondback and a few other guys offer the Nitto 555 with a whitewall.
See - http://www.classicwhitewalltires.com/18inch

As far as I can tell, these aren't offered with raised white lettering.
Is it safe to assume these tires come from Nitto with a white layer?
Could they be a special order that Diamondback makes with Nitto?

I can buy the same size Nitto tire for around $150 less PER TIRE without the whitewall. If I grind my own, that's some serious cash savings.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I love it that you haul stuff with your truck! Mine will get used too, and will get whitewalls on it some day.

No..
Diamondback adds the whitewall to the tires at their plant.
I believe the word is "vulcanize".
So youre paying for the Nitto tire and their service to turn into a ww.
Those Nitto tires have no white rubber built in from Nitto.
