LEAKING Throttle Shaft Question?

This is what I get for talking so highly about my Edelbrock 1407 that was sitting on a shelf for 5 years! A week after installing it on my mid 70's 454 I replaced the spring on my throttle linkage, after working the throttle a few times I noticed gas leaking from the throttle shaft on both sides of the carb but mainly on the passenger side! This is before starting it cold, it leaked about one drop every 5 seconds until it stopped! I warmed it up and took it for a quick spin, popped the hood and no leak! Does the throttle shaft sit on bushings or rubber oil type seals?

Re: LEAKING Throttle Shaft Question?

I had this same problem with my 1406. There are no gaskets below the fuel level on Edelbrocks. the problem was the floats were off and the thing flooded extremly bad. I had to compeltly disassemble, adjust floats and give it a cleaning. It sat for 2 years and was extremly dirty. I have a thread just outlining my problems. Let me try to find it.

Re: LEAKING Throttle Shaft Question?

Did you pump the gas before noticing the leak?

Return spring should be in front of the carb to counterbalance the throttle cable pulling it back so as to keep the throttle bore wear to a minimum

Re: LEAKING Throttle Shaft Question?

Yes, before I started it I pumped it a few times to check the spring tension. Would a slightly stiff spring put enough tension on the shaft to make it leak?

Re: LEAKING Throttle Shaft Question?

No not necessarily but there will always be a slight gap in even new carbs. Pumping the gas will hit the accelerator pump a few times and the gas will hit the throttle shafts and will leak out some. You may have nothing to worry about

By the time i was done i had pulled it apart 3 times. Just do it once but completly dissasemble, blow it out with air and adjust the floats. Will save you a ton of time...i wasnt that smart the first time.

Re: LEAKING Throttle Shaft Question?

I ate at Panda Express today and my fortune cookie said my luck would change today, lol! The Edelbrock 2696 square bore to spread bore adapter is a special order here in Phx from Autozone, O'Rielly's and Loper's but I stopped at Autozone to buy some hose clamps and long be hold, there was a 2696 adapter hanging on the wall! So now I'll switch out the Mr. Gasket open adapter I just bought a week ago and replace it with what I should have ordered in the first place! Believe your fortune cookies, I know corny but humor me!

Re: LEAKING Throttle Shaft Question?

What are you trying to solve with the spacer? If your fuel is percolating, that's probably not going to solve it. Don't know if that's your problem you'd need to get a non-metal spacer to block the heat transfer to the bowls. Good luck, with as much trouble as you've had with that engine I know carb problems are something you'd like to avoid. lol.

Re: LEAKING Throttle Shaft Question?

The paperwork included with the edelbrock 1407 said to NOT USE and open adapter and to ONLY USE a 2696 adapter. I posted a thread asking why and the majority of the responses agreed with Edelbrock so when I came across one I bought it! Now after installing it I get a different reading on my vacuum gauge, before I'd get a perfectly steady 18hg and now I get a fluctuation between 15hg and 20hg! Lol, it runs different everyday but I do have a non-metal spacer that was under the 1407 that I did not use with the new spacer so I'll put the non-metal spacer back under the 1407 and see if it steady's my vacuum gauge! I'm getting tired of working on this thing, lol!

Re: LEAKING Throttle Shaft Question?

If you have fluctuations your mixture is either off or you have a vacuum leak
