rear end questions

we have a1996 chevy 1/2 ton 350 auto , the rear axle seals are leaking so i took off the rear end cover off to take out the c clips . the problem is i cant see the clips. there are little springs and sheet metal pieces in there. i cant see the spider gears either. how do i take the c clips out ?

Sounds like you have a gov-bomb. There's a 1/2" shaft that runs through it, the axles rest against this shaft. IIRC, there's a bolt that screws into the end of the shaft to hold it in place. Pull the bolt, then the shaft, then your axles can be pushed in about 1/4"...then you'll see the "C" clips. Some have slots in the case where the "C" clip goes, aim that downward and the "C" clip should fall out once the axle is pushed in.

It's Chevy's "gov-lock". They're known for exploding, particularly in the 10-bolt. The bigger ones in the semi-floater rear are much stouter.
