1972 Big Block SWB ... Driveshaft Question... Need a little help...

1972 Big Block SWB ... Driveshaft Question... Need a little help...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am building a 1972 SWB Big Block truck with a Turbo 400 Transmission & I have an Original Big Block Cab for it.... The frame is from a 1972 SWB Small Block, Automatic Transmission truck......

My question is this.... Did the 1972 Short Bed Big Block Trucks have two piece drive shafts or a One piece?

My Frame I am using has the carrier bearing bracket to support the carrier bearing of a two piece driveshaft.... Which I was thinking of removing the bracket.... Unless the BB Short bed trucks had two piece driveshafts as well & I will go that route....

I have another 69-70 Short bed frame that does NOT have the carrier bearing bracket but that frame was an original Small Block, standard shift truck.... therefore... I am curious how they were from the factory when there was a Big Block in them....

I am only interested in the Short Bed configurations.....

Any help would be appreciated....

I am 99% sure it would of originally had a two piece. However i am not a fan or carrier bearings and i always convert to one piece driveshafts. Any good machine shop can cut a driveshaft thats too long and balance it(and switch out yokes if need be).

Wrong, I spend a lot of time fixing driveshafts made by machine shops. I've been building/repairing driveshafts for about 5 years at a driveline shop. Most machine shops don't have the proper equipment to ballance a one piece driveshaft much less a multiple piece driveline.

I think 6 cyl manual trans swbs came with a one piece driveline.
I have built many one piece driveshafts for lowered swb and lwb trucks with no problems.
2 piece drivelines do serve a purpose, they can rotate at higher speeds per a given lenth, and can be used to accomidate some strange driveline angles.
If you're just building a street truck with less than 700hp that won't go over 140 mph a one piece 1310 shaft will be just fine.

Don't use precision or house brand ujoints. Get some nice non greaseable spicer or neapco joints

Re: 1972 Big Block SWB ... Driveshaft Question... Need a little help...

OK Guys...

I build all types of Performance cars & trucks......Thanks for the tips but.....

My question is.....

What came from GM in 71-72 when the Truck was a Factory Big Block \ TH400 & had a Short bed?

One Piece or Two Piece?

The truck will be an Original restoration type build.....

It will have a BB & a Turbo 400 Transmission.....Light cam at best....

I assume these came from GM in one configuration..... just thought someone has an Original 1971-72 Big Block Short Bed or has torn down & or Built several of these over the years & can confirm the type of driveshaft used....

I do know I can make it work either way but I would like to find someone that has an original 71-72 BB truck that could tell me the answer....

Anyone have an Un-Molested Original they can look at?

Re: 1972 Big Block SWB ... Driveshaft Question... Need a little help...

I have a BB SWB truck but it is not factory.
I searched and found an old post from Special K in 2006!
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=207962
Well respected on this board... If he said it, pretty sure he knew the answer.

The old driveline shop here in Wichita charged me about $140 to cut, spin balance and add the correct yoke and spicer u joints. Reasonable price for all that work. They mentioned that it's short enough for a 1 piece unit but it's only like 10 inches from their length threshold. They mentioned that the support allows for better ride quality under load (flexing I guess).
Sorry for the book... Hope it helped.

Should be a 2 piece. Remember , there are atleast 3 different carrier bearings and brackets. If your frame was a small block it probably has a small block carrier bearing bracket rivitted to the frame. A big block bracket is bolted to the frame.

and bradman, some of us arent fortunate enough to have driveline shops close. My local machine shop does an excellent job on driveshafts, I've had a few done there and no issues to date.

You don't have to be close, we used to build shafts for hot rod tv, they are in california and we are in missouri.
We stopped building them shafts when they started wanting us to pay them to build them a shaft.
You wouldn't believe how many professional mechanics don't know how to install a ujoint, seems pretty simple, and it is but people still manage to ruin ujoints and driveshafts.

Re: 1972 Big Block SWB ... Driveshaft Question... Need a little help...

Can anyone tell me if a 53" one piece driveshaft out of a 67 GMC will work in in an 86 SWB with small block and Turbo 400?

If its the right length and has the correct trans yoke and correct rear ujoint it will. So if the shaft has a th400 yoke and the 86 truck is 55.5" from tailshaft to center of rear joint and has a 1310 pinion yoke.

The 67 gmc should have a 1310 rear ujoint.

Thanks for the information & the photos.... I think you answered my question & taught me something... I didn't know about the Bolt in vs the riveted carrier bearing brackets... I have an original unmolested 72 Longbed BB Chevy I am going to look at just to see what it has... It is a Leaf Spring truck though.... that might make a difference... My SWB was a Small Block truck for sure.... but I am converting it to a BB since it is from the frame up on the restoration...
