license plates

i have a 65 c10 with the with just normal plate on it and i saw some guy on cl has 1965 plates for sale my question is can i switch to those plates fairly easy or would it be alot of trouble

I don't know whats legal but a lot of guys around here (east central Illinois)run the old plates and carry the legal plate with them. No one has been stopped for doing this even driving out of state.

well i just called the licence bureau here in ohio and they said i could register the old plate but i would still have to run the old plus the new plate at the same time surely this isnt right lol besides the year specific plate is there a classic plate too or i might just buy them and put them on anyways and carry the other ones with me but not sure

I checked on this several years ago in Oklahoma. One can apply to have the old license plate number re-assigned. It works like "vanity" plates. They issue a current tag to carry in the vehicle while the old tag is displayed. Cost extra.

I have YOM plates on my truck, Ive had them 10+ years,Texas used to charge me $15.00 on top of normal registration to have them, as of a few years ago they stopped charging extra. they have to be clean plates, never issued plate IIRC.

There are also classic and antique plates here too. Classic are thought of just like YOM plates, Antiques plates are limited to use and renew every 5 years. Classic and YOM
renew every year.

I would go down to the DMV and ask them for the policy in writing before I was convinced.

Thanks guys the guy only wants 25 for the pair so im goin to buy them and just register them and i think if i understand right i can run them aslong as i keep new ones with me and keep them current

in VA you bring both plates that match year plates to vehicle show them to cashier pay 1 time fee and get permanent registration. Keep n mind limited driving.

If the old plates do not have current stickers, I can't imagine NOT getting stopped. If it hasn't happened, I wouldn't want to be first.

This is a good topic - CA black or blue plates are extremely popular, but not always easy to get em on there legally. I have seen some folks in CA have a neat trick of sawin the top off the old plate, welding it to the new plate, and painting it like the old plate. (this gives the embossed "CALIFORNIA" at the top). Wouldn't work in states that have gotten away from embossed main ID letters/numbers on the plate itself. Don't know how legal, but it sure is cool.

Ive been running YOM plates for years.

Just buy them..
take them to liscense buruea(sp?)
Spend 16 bucks on Historical plates
and tell them you want to add your YOM plates.
Then proceed out to truck, install YOM plate on rear, put your historical plates and registration in big envelope under seat.

Done!

Ive done this so many times I know the law for ohio better than the kids at the dmv....

Theyre going to give you a sticker, just like the sticker you put on your daily driver...
Dont put it on. YOU DONT HAVE TO!

Many friends and I have been running YOM plates for years, and have traveled into PA, MI, IND, KY, WV with no issue.

thanks grumpy i currently have the normal everday plates on it now i just transfered over from my 98 chevy when i sold it and bought this one so all i have to do is register the yom plates put them on and put the other ones under the seat by the way with the yom tag do i still have to run a front tag

No restrictions on driving in NC. Just have to have the current registered plate in the glove box and toss the YOM plate on the rear. dont even have to go to DMV.

You can run a 1965 plate in Florida. It's treated just like a personalized plate. If anyone has any I'm looking. Mail me please

You cant register YOM plates to current everyday plates.
They can only be added to Historical plates.

So, since Ive never used everyday plates on any of my old cars/trucks, Im not sure what the process is.

I believe you just take current registration in and tell them this is a antique, and thus used for parades, carshows etc only..**whether you drive more often or not...dont tell them that**
Then they should allow you you to buy Historical plates, and add your YOM plates.

And no, you dont have to run a front tag if you dont want to when using YOM plates.

I always keep a printed copy of O.R.C that spells it out, highlighted, with plates and registration under seat, incase you run into a over-zealous popo.

But Ive never had a issue, and only know of one guy who did, and that was in some hicktown in KY on way to Hotrod Reunion. The cop was 1000% wrong but he swapped his plates on the spot to avoid ruining his weekend.
