GMC 3 speed 305 V6 Mileage?

Hey guys,

I am new to the game of fixing up rides, and i am about to trade my daily driver for a 1960 GMC with a factory 3 speed and a 305 V6. I know for a fact that 3 speeds are geared for torque, but is there any way i can improve its high end so it can be my daily driver, and have it not get absolutely terrible gas mileage on the high way?

Yes, You might consider changing to a two barrle carb. set up Holley 500 CFM, change the rear end gears from stock (They may be be 3.92 on the DANA 44) You can drop down to 3.23 for the DANA. I did all the above and get 16-17 if at 60mph. I hit 70 all bets are off drops down to about 12-13. and see if you can find a SM-420 trans (4 speed) this helps.

I bought the gear set wil all the bearings for abpout $320.00 if I rememebr correct. Ring gear, pinion, shim kit, axle bearings, the whole kit.

this is it, im going to keep the rough look and rat rod it (going to clear coat the original patina), add a custom wooden bed, regear the rear end, re do the interior, add a windshield, and redo the exhaust.

That's a great looking truck there. I like the clear-coated patina idea on that rusty red too. Make sure to throw up a build thread in the projects/builds forum so we can follow along!
