grinding noise
Well, my lemon of a truck is now grinding something in the front, not sure what. It happens when first applying break after aceleration, also grinds if completely off the gas, worse when coasting downhill, but does it on flat ground aswell. I've checked the whole frontend and brakes but couldnt find anything wrong. truck has a new transfer case, so it leads me to believe front diff? Any thoughts?

Re: grinding noise
If its not the brakes I would try the front wheel bearing assembly next.Jack up one side and try and wiggle your front tire. Now spin it slowly and listen carefully,do you hear it grinding? Now do the same thing to the other side. You shouldn't feel any wiggle or hear any grinding.
If you remove the front driveshaft you can put the truck on jack stands and hear if the noise is coming from the front differential. Good Luck. Lynn |

Re: grinding noise
wouldn't the wheel bearing assembly whine though? It's not a continuous grinding, usually lasts only a second or two, and only after the truck has been driveen 1-2 miles, i assume thats so whatever is causing it to warm up. thanks for the input, I'll check it out!

Re: grinding noise
When the wheel bearing assembly starts wearing it often times wipes out the brake pads on one wheel.

Re: grinding noise
Ok haven't really had time today, I will get back to ya with a real update. once I check the bearing, pads are fine. This may be a noise I just accept and live with.

Re: grinding noise
I had a brake line collapse and had no noise in the morning until I hit the brake the first time. The pad in back was gone while the one I could see was fine. This was due to the brake not releasing all the way due to the line. Don't ask me how I know, but if you replace brake lines REPLACE BOTH AT THE SAME TIME.

Re: grinding noise
Mine will do it repeatedly. throttle, light braking and grind, throttle light braking, grind. but it will not do it without applying throttle between braking.
